It is narrated from Sayyiduna Usamah bin Akhdari (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man of Banu Shaqirah called "Asram" was among the group who came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He brought with him an Abyssinian slave boy whom he had bought in those lands, and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I have bought this one, and I would like you to name him and supplicate for blessing for him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is your name?" He said: Asram (one who cuts off). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are Zur'ah (one who sows). Now what do you want?" He said: Name this slave boy. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is Asim (protector)," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) closed his fist.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" on account of Bashir bin Maymun. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (4954) narrated it by way of Musaddad bin Musarhad, with this same chain, in abridged form. General principle: Imam al-Khattabi says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) changed the name 'Asram' because it contains the meaning of 'sarm', i.e. cutting (severing). When a rope is cut, one says 'saramtu al-habl', and when the fruit of a date palm is harvested, one says 'saramtu al-nakhlah'. Important point: This name was changed because it suggests the cutting off (ending) of goodness and blessing, whereas the name 'Zur'ah' is a sign of both (goodness and blessing), since it is from 'zira'ah' (agriculture), through which goodness and blessing are obtained.
