Raytah bint Muslim narrates from her father that he was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at Hunayn. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is your name?" He replied: Ghurab (crow). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your name is Muslim."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
Grading: Its chain has the possibility of reaching the level of hasan. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Raytah (also called Ra'itah) bint Muslim is the female narrator of this hadith from her father; no one narrated from her except her son 'Abdullah bin al-Harith. A group narrated from 'Abdullah bin al-Harith, and Imam Abu Hatim al-Razi said about him: "shaykh la ba'sa bihi" (there is no harm in him). Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (8/ 23), al-Bazzar in (1995 - Kashf al-Astar), al-Ruyani in his "Musnad" (1493), and Ibn Qani' in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (3/ 83), by way of Mu'adh bin Hani' al-Bahrani, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari narrated it in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (824) and "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (7/ 252), Ibn Abi Khaythamah in the third part of his "Tarikh" (474 and 1842), Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (2766), Abu Ya'la (6840), al-Ruyani (1493), al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (19/ 1050), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (6044), al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (4859), al-Khatib in "al-Muttafiq wa al-Muftariq" (877), and al-Mizzi in "Tahdhib al-Kamal" (14/ 392), by various routes from 'Abdullah bin al-Harith. Important point: Imam al-Bazzar says that, to our knowledge, Muslim Abu Raytah has no narration other than this one.
