Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7927

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he named his eldest son "Hamzah" after his uncle, and named Husayn "Ja'far" after his uncle. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "I have been commanded to change the names of these two." Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Allah and His Messenger know best. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) named them "Hasan" and "Husayn".
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts, due to corruption, "'Abdullah" has been written.

Grading: God willing, this hadith is "hasan".
Important point: Although 'Abdullah bin Muhammad bin 'Aqil is not free of scholarly discussion (there is criticism of him), since he is narrating this hadith from his own household, there is strong hope that he remembered it and made no error in retaining it. And Allah knows best.
Important point: This narration is closer to acceptance than the narration of Hani' bin Hani' from 'Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that has already passed under number (4829).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i is alone (mutafarrid) in narrating from Hani' bin Hani', and several scholars declared him "majhul" (unknown), while Ibn Sa'd stated explicitly about him that he is "munkar al-hadith".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for the author's present chain, it contains a narrator named al-'Ala' bin Hilal al-Raqqi, who is weak and "munkar al-hadith". He contradicted the trustworthy narrators in this chain and reported it through the chain of 'Abdullah bin Muhammad bin 'Aqil from his father from 'Ali.
Important point: What is "mahfuz" (preserved, i.e. correct) here is that this narration is actually through the chain of Ibn 'Aqil from Muhammad bin 'Ali (known as Ibn al-Hanafiyyah) from his father ('Ali, may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in the "Musnad" (2/ 1370) and in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1219), Abu Ya'la (498), and al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (2780), through the chain of 'Ubaydullah bin 'Amr from 'Abdullah bin Muhammad bin 'Aqil, via Muhammad bin 'Ali Ibn al-Hanafiyyah, from 'Ali.
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar narrated it in his "Musnad" (657) by way of Zuhayr bin Muhammad, and al-Dulabi in "al-Dhurriyyah al-Tahirah" (97 and 144) by way of 'Amr bin Thabit al-Bakri.
Details of the narration: Both of these narrators transmit it from Ibn 'Aqil via Muhammad Ibn al-Hanafiyyah.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Imam Muslim (2133/ 7) narrated it via Ishaq bin Rahawayh and Ishaq bin Mansur, from al-Nadr bin Shumayl, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (23/ 14963 and 14964) and Muslim (2133/ 7) narrated it through the chain of Muhammad bin Ja'far (Ghundar) from Shu'bah, from Husayn bin 'Abd al-Rahman, Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir and al-A'mash (separately). Imam al-Bukhari (3538) narrated it from Muhammad bin Kathir from Shu'bah from Mansur (alone), and Muslim (2133/ 7) through the chain of Ibn Abi 'Adi from Shu'bah from Husayn (alone).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (22/ 14249) narrated it by way of Hushaym, al-Bukhari (6187) and Muslim (2132/ 4) by way of Khalid bin 'Abdullah, and Muslim (2133/ 4) by way of 'Abthar bin al-Qasim; these three narrate it from Husayn. Also, Imam Ahmad (23/ 14973) narrated it by way of Ma'mar, and in (15130) from Ziyad al-Bakka'i, and Muslim (2133/ 3) by way of Jarir; these three narrate it from Mansur. Furthermore, Imam Ahmad (23/ 14227 and 14363), al-Bukhari (3115) and Muslim (2133/ 5) narrated it by various routes from al-A'mash. In short, it is established through the chains of all three: Husayn, Mansur and al-A'mash.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (22/ 14364) and Ibn Majah (3736) narrated it through the chain of Abu Sufyan Talhah bin Nafi' from Jabir bin 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 22/ (14357), Abu Dawud (4966), al-Tirmidhi (2842) and Ibn Hibban (5816) narrated it by way of Abu al-Zubayr (Muhammad bin Muslim al-Makki), who reports it from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) as marfu': "Whoever is named with my name should not take my kunyah, and whoever takes my kunyah should not be named with my name."
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan gharib" through this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Zubayr did not explicitly state that he heard from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him); moreover, the wording of this narration contradicts the narration of Salim bin Abi al-Ja'd and Abu Sufyan from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him). Imam al-Bayhaqi said in "Ma'rifat al-Sunan" that Imam Muslim did not narrate it in the "Sahih" even though Abu al-Zubayr meets his condition; perhaps the reason is its contradiction of the narration of Muhammad bin al-Munkadir and Salim bin Abi al-Ja'd, and further its contradiction of the narrations of Abu Hurayrah and Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with them). A narration with the same meaning as Abu al-Zubayr's is also reported from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), but there is disagreement over it, whereas the hadiths of absolute prohibition are more numerous and more authentic in their chains.
Note / Clarification: What al-Bayhaqi means is the narration of Ibn al-Munkadir that al-Bukhari (6186) and Muslim (2133) (7) narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): A son was born to a man among us, and he named him "al-Qasim". We said: We will not call you "Abu al-Qasim". The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed, and he said: "Name your son 'Abd al-Rahman."
