It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I sought permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (in his room), and I entered upon him in an upper chamber where he (peace and blessings be upon him) was lying on a mat woven of palm leaves, with part of his blessed body on the dust. Under his head was a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibre, near his head hung a tanned hide, and in one corner of the room lay acacia leaves (used for tanning leather). I greeted him (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam and then sat down, and said: O Messenger of Allah, you are the Prophet of Allah, His chosen one and the best of His creation, while Chosroes and Caesar are (living in luxury) on thrones of gold and beds of silk and brocade?! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umar, those people have been given their good things in advance in this world, and they will soon come to an end, whereas we are a people whose good things have been kept back for us in our Hereafter."

It is narrated from the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to visit one of his wives who had a container of honey, from which he (peace and blessings be upon him) would take some honey, and he would stay sitting with her. It is narrated from Abdullah bin Shaqiq that he said: I was a neighbour of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) for two years. He said: O Ibn Shaqiq, do you see these rooms of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? By Allah, I have seen the time when we would be near these rooms and none of us had enough food to fill his stomach, to the point that, from the severity of hunger, one of us would take a stone and tie it over the hollow of his (empty) stomach with a rope or some cord. By the One in whose Hand is my soul, I have also seen the time when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed dates among us, and each one of us received seven dates. Among my seven there was a hashafah (an extremely dry, poor-quality date), yet I would not have been pleased to get a fine date in its place. (The narrator says:) I asked: Why is that, O Abu Hurayrah? He said: "Because it was tougher for my jaws (that is, it stayed longer in the mouth), so I kept chewing it."
