Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7257

It is narrated from the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that forty nights in a row would pass over us and neither a lamp nor any other fire was lit in the house of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). (The narrator says:) We asked: O Mother of the Believers, then how did you live? She said: "On the two black things, namely dates and water."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: This hadith is sahih, but this particular chain is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for this chain's weakness is Muhammad bin Abi Humayd (al-Zuraqi al-Madani); however, he has been corroborated (through which the hadith reaches the level of sahih).
Note / Clarification: The details of the other narrators of the chain are: Abu Kurayb is Muhammad bin al-Ala', and Ibn Abi Adi is Muhammad bin Ibrahim.
