Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7249

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I sought permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (in his room), and I entered upon him in an upper chamber where he (peace and blessings be upon him) was lying on a mat woven of palm leaves, with part of his blessed body on the dust. Under his head was a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibre, near his head hung a tanned hide, and in one corner of the room lay acacia leaves (used for tanning leather). I greeted him (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam and then sat down, and said: O Messenger of Allah, you are the Prophet of Allah, His chosen one and the best of His creation, while Chosroes and Caesar are (living in luxury) on thrones of gold and beds of silk and brocade?! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umar, those people have been given their good things in advance in this world, and they will soon come to an end, whereas we are a people whose good things have been kept back for us in our Hereafter."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
