Nafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that when the people broke allegiance to Yazid bin Muawiyah, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) gathered all his sons and family members, affirmed the testimony of faith, and said: "To proceed! We pledged allegiance to this person in the name of Allah and His Messenger, and I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that for every deceiver, a flag will be set up on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be announced that this is the treachery of so-and-so. And after shirk, the greatest treachery is that a man pledges allegiance to someone in the name of Allah and His Messenger and then breaks it. Therefore, none of you should break allegiance to Yazid, nor even look towards the matter of the caliphate, otherwise there will be no relation between me and him."

In the gathering of Sayyiduna Salim (may Allah have mercy on him), a person was narrating this hadith that once bread and meat were presented to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give me a foreleg." The foreleg was given to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he ate it. After that, he said: "Give me another foreleg." That too was given to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he ate it as well. Then he said: "Give me another foreleg." Someone said, "O Messenger of Allah! There are only two forelegs in a goat." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By your father's life! If you had remained silent, I would have continued to receive forelegs as long as I kept asking you for them." When Sayyiduna Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) heard this hadith, he said: "This is not correct at all, because I heard Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Allah forbids you from swearing oaths by the names of your forefathers.'"

Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I was sitting with Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), someone asked him about the nabidh (fermented drink) of a pitcher. He replied that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has declared it haram (forbidden). Hearing this, I felt uneasy. I went to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) and told him that someone had asked Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) about the nabidh of a pitcher, and he said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has declared it haram. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: He spoke the truth, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has declared it haram. I asked, what is meant by a pitcher? He replied: Anything that is made from baked clay.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once someone asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! After entering into Ihram, which animals are we allowed to kill? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no harm in killing five kinds of animals: the scorpion, the mouse, the kite, the crow, and the rabid dog."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that I once saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appearing on the pulpit. As soon as I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I quickly entered the mosque and sat down at a place, but before I had the chance to hear anything, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) descended from the pulpit. I asked the people what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said. The people informed me that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had forbidden making nabidh in dabba’ and muzaffat.

It is narrated, most likely as a marfu’ hadith, from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that whoever says "In sha Allah" while taking an oath, has the choice: if he wishes to fulfill his oath, he may do so, and if he wishes to retract from it, he may do so without becoming a perjurer.

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw a silk garment being sold, so he said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "If you were to buy it, you could wear it on Fridays or when delegations come to you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is worn by the one who has no share in the Hereafter." A few days later, some silk garments came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from somewhere, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent one of those garments to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "You yourself said what I heard about this, and now you have sent me this silk garment?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have sent it to you so that you may sell it and use its price for your own needs."

Anas bin Sirin, may Allah have mercy on him, says that I once asked Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, "Should I recite (Qur'an) behind the imam?" He replied, "The recitation of the imam is sufficient for you." I asked, "Can I recite a long (portion) in the Sunnah prayers of Fajr?" He replied, "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray the night prayer in sets of two rak'ahs." I said, "I am asking you about the Sunnah prayers of Fajr." He replied, "You are a man of thick understanding; do you not see that I am just beginning to speak? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray the night prayer in sets of two rak'ahs, and when he feared the approach of true dawn, he would add one rak'ah to make it Witr, then he would lay his head down and rest. Now, if you wish, you may say that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) slept, or if you wish, you may say that he did not sleep. Then he would get up and pray the Sunnah of Fajr at the time when the call to prayer was being heard in his ears. So how much and what kind of length would there be in that?" Then I asked, "A man has made a bequest that his wealth be spent in the way of Allah; can his wealth be spent on Hajj?" He replied, "If you do so, that too will be in the way of Allah." I further asked, "If a person misses one rak'ah with the imam, and the imam says salam, can he make up the missed rak'ah before the imam stands up?" He replied, "When the imam says salam, the follower should immediately stand up." Then I asked, "If a person, in exchange for a loan, takes more than what he gave, what is the ruling?" He replied, "On the Day of Resurrection, every deceiver will have a flag placed at his hips in proportion to his deception."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that I went out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he did not come out of the state of ihram; I went out with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them), and they also did not come out of the state of ihram.

The hadith of raising the hands from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) is also narrated with this second chain of transmission.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praying on a donkey, at that time he was going to Khaybar.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Let not the Bedouins overpower you regarding the name of your prayer. Remember! Its name is 'Isha prayer. At that time, they milk their camels (and for this reason, they call the Isha prayer 'Atamah)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not prevent your women from coming to the mosque at night." Upon hearing this, one of the sons of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, "By Allah! We will not leave them like this, they will take it as an excuse for themselves." Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) struck his chest and said, "I am narrating to you the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and you are saying this?"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Goodness and blessing have been placed in the forelocks of horses until the Day of Resurrection."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once a man came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and inquired about the night prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The night prayer consists of two rak‘ahs at a time, and when you fear that morning is near, then add one rak‘ah to these two, and that will suffice as witr for all the prayers you have offered during the night."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A good dream is one of the seventy parts of prophethood."

Abdullah bin Saraqah, may Allah have mercy on him, says that I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, about the sale of fruits, so he said that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade the sale of fruits before the end of «عاهه». I asked him about the meaning of «عاهه», so he said: The rising of the Thurayya star.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever does not find shoes should cut his leather socks below the ankles and wear them.

And the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "There are five kinds of animals which there is no sin in killing even while in the state of Ihram: the scorpion, the rat, the kite, the crow, and the rabid dog."

And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The tribe of Aslam—may Allah keep it safe; the tribe of Ghifar—may Allah forgive it; and 'Usayyah disobeyed Allah and His Messenger."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed with his hand towards the east and said three times: "The trial will emerge from here, from where the horn of Satan will emerge."

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came at night.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Dhu’l-Hulayfah as the miqat for the people of Madinah, Qarn for the people of Najd, and Juhfah for the people of Sham. These three places I myself remember having heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it has been related to me that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Yalamlam is for the people of Yemen.” Someone asked about Iraq, so he said: At that time, Iraq did not exist.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say that Allah is very pleased with the prayer performed in congregation.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was walking along the road when he saw a pile of grain which its owner had arranged very nicely. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put his hand inside it and found that the grain inside was of poor quality. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sell this separately. Whoever deceives us is not from among us."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been sent with the sword so that only Allah, Who has no partner, may be worshipped. My sustenance has been placed under the shadow of my spear. Humiliation has been decreed for those who oppose my commands, and whoever imitates a people will be counted among them."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been sent with the sword before the Hour so that only Allah, Who has no partner, is worshipped. My sustenance has been placed under the shadow of my spear. Humiliation has been decreed for those who oppose my commands, and whoever imitates a people is counted among them."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed two rak'ahs of prayer inside the Ka'bah.

Abu Najih says that once someone asked Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) about fasting on the day of Arafah. He replied: I performed Hajj with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but he did not fast on that day. I performed Hajj with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Sayyiduna Umar, and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them), but they also did not fast on that day. I neither fast on that day nor do I command it, nor do I forbid it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If a person has any right due upon him from someone, then two nights should not pass in such a way that his will is not written and kept with him."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any one of you dies, his abode is presented before him morning and evening. If he is among the people of Paradise, then the abode of the people of Paradise is shown to him, and if he is among the people of Hell, then the abode of the people of Hell is shown to him, and it is said: 'This is your abode until you are resurrected.'"

Nafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once, a sudden piece of news regarding Lady Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) reached Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), so he set out and in one night covered the distance usually traveled in three nights. He continued traveling until evening. I mentioned the prayer to him, but he paid no attention and kept going, until darkness began to fall. Then Salim or another man said to him, “It is very late in the evening, please perform the prayer.” He replied, “When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in a hurry while traveling, he would combine these two prayers, and I also intend to combine these two, so keep moving.” So they continued traveling until the twilight disappeared, then he dismounted and performed both prayers together.

Yunus bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) once asked Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about a man who divorces his wife during her menstrual period. He replied, "Do you know Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both)?" I said, "Yes!" He said, "He also divorced his wife during her menstrual period. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went and informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Tell him to take her back, then if he still wishes to divorce her, he should do so during her period of purity.'"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The voluntary prayers of the night and day are (to be offered) two by two (rak‘ahs)."

Mus'ab bin Sa'd (may Allah have mercy on him) says that some people came to Ibn 'Amir to visit him during his illness and began to praise him. Sayyiduna Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who had been sitting silently before, said: "I will not deceive you more than them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah does not accept charity from stolen spoils of war, nor does He accept prayer without purification."

Ibn Awn, may Allah have mercy on him, says that I wrote a letter to Nafi', may Allah have mercy on him, in which I asked him whether the polytheists were invited (to Islam) before fighting. He wrote back to me in reply that this used to happen in the beginning of Islam, and when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) attacked Banu Mustaliq, those people were unaware and their animals were drinking water. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) killed their fighting men, took the rest captive, and on that same day, Lady Juwayriya bint al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) came into his share. This hadith has been narrated to me by Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who participated in the army.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding silk: "This is worn by the one who has no share in the Hereafter."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Witr is the last rak'ah of the night prayers."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the prayers which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never used to abandon were: two rak‘ahs before the Zuhr prayer and two rak‘ahs after it, two rak‘ahs after Maghrib, two rak‘ahs after ‘Isha, and two rak‘ahs before the Fajr prayer.
