Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Mak’hool (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a martyr will receive six rewards on the Day of Judgment:
A. He will be safe from the punishment of Allah.
B. He will be protected from the great terror (Faz‘a Akbar).
C. He will intercede for so many people from his household.
D. He will be adorned with the ornament of faith.
E. He will see his abode in Paradise.
F. All his sins will be forgiven.

Hazrat Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that for a person who has performed Hajj, one expedition (ghazwah) is better than performing Hajj ten times.

Hazrat Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I asked Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) about this verse of the Holy Qur'an: { وَلاَ تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِینَ قُتِلُوا فِی سَبِیلِ اللہِ أَمْوَاتًا بَلْ أَحْیَائٌ عِنْدَ رَبِّہِمْ یُرْزَقُونَ } He replied that we asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, and he said that the souls of the martyrs are in the form of green birds and roam freely in Paradise wherever they wish. Then they sit on lanterns hanging from the Throne. Allah Almighty addresses them and says, "Ask for whatever you wish." They say, "O our Lord! What more can we ask from You? We are roaming in Paradise; what else could we desire?" Allah Almighty will say, "Ask Me for whatever you wish." They will say, "O our Lord! What should we ask from You? We are enjoying ourselves in Paradise; what else could we wish for?" Allah Almighty will again turn to them and say, "Ask Me for whatever you wish." They will say, "O our Lord! What should we ask from You? We are roaming wherever we wish in Paradise; what more could we want?" Then, when they see that Allah Almighty definitely wants to give them something, they will say, "O our Lord! We ask You to return our souls to our bodies so that we may go and fight in Your path again." When Allah Almighty sees that they are not asking for anything from Paradise, He will leave them in their present state.

Hazrat Shurahbil bin Simt (may Allah have mercy on him) says that we said to Hazrat Ka'b bin Murrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him)! Tell us a hadith narrated by the Prophet ﷺ and fear Allah!" Hazrat Ka'b bin Murrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Shoot arrows at the enemy. Whoever's arrow strikes the enemy, Allah Almighty raises his rank by one degree in Paradise.' Upon hearing this statement of the Prophet ﷺ, Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Naham (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'O Messenger of Allah! How great is that rank?' The Prophet ﷺ replied: 'That rank is not like the land of your father, but the distance between two ranks is the distance of a hundred years.' We then said: 'O Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him)! Tell us a hadith narrated by the Prophet ﷺ and fear Him.' He said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever's hair turns white in the path of Allah, it will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection, and whoever shoots an arrow in the path of Allah, it is as if he has freed a slave.'"

It is narrated from Hazrat Malik bin Abdullah Khath'ami (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The person whose feet become dusty in the path of Allah, Allah makes the Hellfire forbidden for him."

Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that using my whip in the path of Allah is more beloved to me than performing Hajj after Hajj.

Hazrat Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I am the first Arab who shot an arrow in the path of Allah.

Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man came to the service of the Holy Prophet ﷺ and asked, "If I am martyred in the way of Allah, will all my sins be forgiven?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "If you are martyred while being patient, seeking reward, advancing forward and not turning back, then all your deeds will be forgiven except for debt. Jibreel has informed me of this in the same way."

Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when we returned from the Battle of Tabuk, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said that if any of you meets those who stayed behind, he should neither speak to them nor keep their company.

Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Hajj is obligatory upon you; it is a virtuous deed which Allah Almighty has commanded, and Jihad is superior to Hajj.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that in Paradise there is a palace called 'Adn. Around it are pastures. It has five thousand doors. Only a prophet, a truthful one, a martyr, or a just leader can enter through each door.

Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that feeling sleepy during battle is a tranquility sent by Allah, and feeling sleepy during prayer is from Satan. Then he recited this verse: {إذْ یُغَشَاکُم النُّعَاسَ أَمَنَۃً مِنْہُ }

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Hazrat Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) was standing with the Prophet and shooting arrows, and the Prophet was behind him. The Prophet had raised his blessed head, and Hazrat Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) also raised his head and was saying, "O Messenger of Allah! I will be struck before you."

Hazrat Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that on the day of the Battle of Uhud, I was among those people upon whom Allah Almighty cast a peaceful sleep.

The narration of Hazrat Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) is also transmitted from Hazrat Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when Hazrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) was sent to Basra, Hazrat Bara’ (may Allah have mercy on him) was among those who accompanied him. He was among his deputies and ministers. Hazrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say to him, “Select any position for yourself.” Hazrat Bara’ (may Allah have mercy on him) replied to him, “Whatever I ask from you, will you give it to me?” Hazrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Yes, of course!” Hazrat Bara’ (may Allah have mercy on him) said, “I do not ask you for the governorship of Egypt and its surrounding towns, rather I ask you to give me my bow, my horse, my spear, and my sword, and allow me to go out in the path of Allah for jihad.” Hazrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Hazrat Bara’ (may Allah have mercy on him) with an army. He was the first martyr of that army.

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once Hazrat Bara (may Allah have mercy on him) hummed a verse of poetry. I said to him, "O brother! You are humming poetry; what if this is your last utterance, what will become of you?" He replied, "I will not die on my bed. I have killed ninety-nine polytheists and disbelievers."

Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that his uncle, for some reason, could not participate in the Battle of Badr. He said, "I could not take part in the first battle in the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but if Allah gives me another opportunity to fight against the disbelievers, then Allah will see what I do!" Then, during the Battle of Uhud, when the Muslims were scattered, my uncle said, "O Allah! I seek Your forgiveness for what happened to the Muslims and I declare my innocence regarding what happened to the disbelievers." Then he advanced and met Hazrat Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) near Uhud. Hazrat Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "I am with you." Hazrat Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) says, "The way he fought, I did not have the strength to fight like that." There were more than twenty marks of swords, spears, and arrows on his body. We used to say about him and his companions that this verse was revealed about them: "Among them are some who have fulfilled their vow, and among them are some who are still waiting." (Al-Ahzab: 23)

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I have been sent with the sword before the Day of Judgment, until only Allah is worshipped and no partner is associated with Him. My sustenance is placed under the shadow of my spear. The fate of the one who opposes me is humiliation and disgrace. Whoever imitates a people is one of them.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty becomes very pleased upon seeing two people. One is the person who leaves his beloved wife, bed, and blanket, and stands for prayer out of love for Me and desire for My rewards. The second is the person who fights in the way of Allah, runs with it, remembers the consequences of fleeing from the battlefield, and instead of returning, rushes towards the enemy and is martyred. Upon this, Allah Almighty says to the angels: O angels! Look at My servant; he returned towards the enemy out of love for Me and desire for My rewards, and was martyred.

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was reclining in the house of Hazrat Umm Haram bint Milhan (may Allah be pleased with her) when sleep overtook him. After a while, he woke up smiling. Hazrat Bint Milhan (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the reason for his smile, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that some people from my Ummah will perform jihad in the green sea; on the Day of Judgment, they will be seated on thrones like kings. Hazrat Umm Haram bint Milhan (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "O Messenger of Allah! Pray that Allah includes me among those people." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed, "O Allah! Include her among them." After this, she was married to Hazrat Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him). Later, she set out on a sea journey with her son Hazrat Qarzah (may Allah be pleased with him), and on the return, she fell from her mount and was martyred, and was buried there.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says that fighting one battle in the way of Allah is, in my view, better than spending a great deal of wealth in the way of Allah which is accepted.

It is narrated from Hazrat Alqamah bin Shihab (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever did not get the opportunity to fight alongside me should participate in the naval jihad, because one naval battle is superior to two battles fought on land. The reward for one who is martyred at sea is equal to that of two martyrs on land. The most virtuous martyrs in the sight of Allah are the "Ashab al-Wukuf." The people asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Who are the 'Ashab al-Wukuf'?" He replied: Those whose mounts overturn and they are martyred because of it.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the one who returns alive from a naval jihad is like that worshipper who, while fighting on land, has been martyred, rolling in his own blood.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) says that one expedition by sea is superior to ten expeditions by land. Whoever crossed the sea while fighting in the path of Allah, it is as if he has crossed all the valleys of the earth.

Hazrat Ikrimah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) set out for a naval expedition and I was with him.

Hazrat Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) says that no one should travel by sea except a pilgrim, a warrior in the path of Allah, or one intending to perform Umrah.

Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said that I am greatly astonished at those who travel by sea and those who migrate for the sake of trade.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that Allah Almighty will not question me about the army that travels by sea.

Abu Rashid Habraani (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I was on a jihad expedition with Hazrat Miqdad (may Allah have mercy on him), riding on a litter. His body was so heavy and large that it was hanging from the litter. I said to him, "O Abu Aswad (may Allah have mercy on him): Allah the Exalted has excused people like you." He replied, "The verse { انْفِرُوا خِفَافًا وَثِقَالاَ } of Surah al-Bara'ah, that is, Surah al-Tawbah, has denied that we are excused."

Hazrat Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that my foster father from Banu Murrah told me that he saw Hazrat Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) in the Battle of Mu'tah; he dismounted from his light-colored horse, cut its hamstrings, and was martyred while advancing.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that during the Battle of Yamama, I came to Hazrat Abdullah bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him), who was lying on the ground, wounded and battered. I stood by him, and he asked: O Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both)! Has the fasting person broken his fast? I replied: Yes! He said: Then give me water from that shield so that I may break my fast. I went to the pond to get water, but it was filled with blood. I separated the blood and took the water. When I returned to him, his soul had departed.

Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) fought more bravely than all the other Muslims in the Battle of Uhud.

Hazrat Muawiyah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the first person to shoot an arrow in the path of Allah was Hazrat Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hazrat Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) says that if a person makes a will to spend something in the way of Allah, then that thing should be given to the Mujahideen.

Hazrat Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that whoever fasts for one day in the way of Allah, Allah Almighty creates a trench between him and Hell whose distance is equal to the space between the earth and the sky.

Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says that if I do not walk in the path of Allah, if I do not place my forehead on the ground in the path of Allah, and if I do not keep the company of those who select good words as carefully as fine dates are chosen, then I would wish for my death.

Hazrat Khalid bin Waleed (may Allah be pleased with him) said that due to striving much in the path of Allah, I could not learn much of the Qur'an.

Hazrat Khalid bin Waleed (may Allah be pleased with him) says that there is no night on the face of the earth more beloved to me, in which I receive the good news of a son and a bride is sent to me whom I love, than that night which is full of hardship, which I spend with a group of Mujahideen, and in the morning I lead them to attack the enemy. Therefore, jihad is obligatory upon you.

Hazrat Khalid bin Waleed (may Allah be pleased with him) says: By Allah! I do not know which day I love more—the day on which Allah grants me martyrdom, or the day on which I am given a great honor.
