It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has the means to reach the Hajj of the House of Allah and does not perform Hajj, and whoever has wealth enough for zakah to be due on it and does not pay its zakah, will ask to be sent back (to the world) at the time of death." A man said: "Fear Allah, O Abu Abbas! Only a disbeliever asks to be sent back." He said: "I will recite to you Qur'an concerning it: 'O you who believe! Spend from what We have provided you before death comes to one of you and he says: My Lord! Why did You not grant me respite for a short while?'"

The narrator Razin al-Jurjani said: I asked Sa'id bin Jubayr about this verse, "And (also forbidden to you are) married women" [Al-Nisa: 24], and he said: "I have no knowledge of it." Then I asked al-Dahhak bin Muzahim and mentioned what Sa'id bin Jubayr had said, and he said: "I bear witness that I myself heard him (Sa'id bin Jubayr) asking Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) this question." Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: This verse was revealed on the day of Khaybar. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gained victory, the Muslims obtained (as captives) women of the People of the Book who had husbands (among the disbelievers). When a man wanted to go to one of these women, she would say: "I have a husband." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about this, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "And (also forbidden to you are) married women" [Al-Nisa: 24], to the end of the verse, meaning the captive woman from the polytheists who is taken; there is no harm in relations with her. The narrator said: I mentioned this to Sa'id bin Jubayr, and he said: "He spoke the truth."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said concerning this saying of Allah Almighty, "And when the Prophet confided a matter to one of his wives" [Al-Tahrim: 3]: Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) came in to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in her house while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was with Sayyidah Mariyah (may Allah be pleased with her) (in marital relations). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "Do not tell Aishah, so that I may give you glad tidings: your father will become caliph after Abu Bakr, after me, when I die." So Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) went and told Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she had seen the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with Sayyidah Mariyah (may Allah be pleased with her) (in that state), and also told her that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had informed her that Abu Bakr would become caliph after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Umar after him. Then Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Who told you this?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The All-Knowing, the All-Aware (Allah) told me." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "I will not look at you until you make Mariyah unlawful for yourself." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) made her unlawful for himself, whereupon Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed: "O Prophet! Why do you make unlawful" [Al-Tahrim: 1].

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حَكِيمٍ الْأَوْدِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو مَالِكٍ الْجَنْبِيُّ، عَنْ جُوَيْبِرٍ، عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: إِذَا أَتَاهُ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ بِالْوَحْيِ لَمْ يَفْرُغْ حَتَّى يُزَمَّلَ مِنَ الْوَحْيِ حَتَّى يَتَكَلَّمَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَأَوَّلِهِ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يُغْشَى عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ جِبْرِيلُ: لِمَ تَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ: «مَخَافَةَ أَنْ أَنْسَى» ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: {سَنُقْرِئُكَ فَلَا تَنْسَى}
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When Jibril (peace be upon him) brought the revelation, (the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) would not be finished until he (peace and blessings be upon him) was wrapped up because of the revelation, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would keep repeating (hurriedly) the beginning of the revelation, out of fear that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would lose consciousness. Jibril (peace be upon him) asked him (peace and blessings be upon him): "Why do you do this?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Out of fear that I will forget." So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "We will make you recite, and you will not forget" [Al-A'la: 6].

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, spoke intimately with Musa (peace be upon him) in one hundred and forty thousand words over three days. When Musa (peace be upon him) heard the speech of human beings, he felt aversion to them because of the speech of the Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, that had fallen upon his ears. Among what Allah Almighty said to him in that intimate discourse was: 'O Musa! Those who adorn themselves have never adorned themselves with anything like abstinence from the world; those godfearing people who seek nearness to Me have never drawn near to Me through anything like refraining from what has been made unlawful for them; and the worshippers have never worshipped with anything like weeping out of fear of Me.' Musa (peace be upon him) said: 'O Lord of all creation, O Master of the Day of Judgement, O Possessor of Majesty and Honour! What have You prepared for them, and how will You reward them?' Allah Almighty said: 'As for those who abstain from the world, I will permit them to dwell wherever they wish in My Paradise. As for those who refrain from what I have made unlawful for them, on the Day of Resurrection every servant will be called to a strict reckoning except the scrupulous, for I will feel shy before them, honour and ennoble them, and admit them into Paradise without reckoning. As for those who weep out of fear of Me, theirs will be the loftiest station, in which no one will share with them.'"

Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "And know that whatever spoils you obtain, one-fifth of it is for Allah" [Al-Anfal: 41], up to "for Allah" (this is merely the opening of the statement, just as "To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth" [Al-Baqarah: 284], so likewise here). Then he made the share of Allah and the share of the Messenger one share, "and for the near relatives" [Al-Anfal: 41], and he put these two shares into strength (preparation) of horses and weapons. The share of the orphans, the needy and the wayfarer he gave to no one other than them. And the remaining four shares he assigned thus: two shares for the horse, one share for its rider, and one share for the foot soldier.
