Arqam bin Shurahbil (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I travelled with Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) from Madinah to Syria, and I asked him: "Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) make a bequest?" He said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fell ill with the illness in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the house of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call Ali to me." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Messenger of Allah! Shall we not call Abu Bakr?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call him." Then Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Shall we not call Umar?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call him." Then Sayyidah Umm al-Fadl (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Shall we not call your uncle Abbas?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call him." When they had all come, he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head but did not find Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) present, so he fell silent and said nothing. At this Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Get up and leave the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); if he (peace and blessings be upon him) had any need of us, he would certainly have mentioned it." He repeated this three times. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let Abu Bakr lead the people in prayer." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Abu Bakr was present, so Abu Bakr went forward and began leading the people in prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) felt some relief in himself, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) came out supported between two men. When the people sensed his presence (peace and blessings be upon him), they said "Subhan Allah" (as an alert), and Abu Bakr began to step back, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) signalled to him to stay in his place. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began the recitation from the point Abu Bakr had reached, and Abu Bakr was standing while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting; Abu Bakr was following the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the people were following Abu Bakr. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had not yet completed the prayer when his condition (peace and blessings be upon him) became very grave, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) went out supported between two men while both his feet (peace and blessings be upon him) were dragging along the ground. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) made no bequest.
