Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to set out for the expedition of Tabuk, he said to al-Jadd bin Qays: "O Jadd bin Qays, what do you say about fighting the Banu al-Asfar (the Romans)?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am a man fond of women, and I fear that when I see the women of the Banu al-Asfar I will fall into temptation. So permit me to stay behind (at home), and do not put me to temptation." Thereupon Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "And among them is he who says: Permit me and do not put me to temptation. Indeed, into temptation they have fallen" [Al-Tawbah: 49].
