Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said concerning this saying of Allah Almighty, "Do not say ra'ina" [Al-Baqarah: 104]: People used to say to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Ir'ana sam'ak" (lend us your ear), and ra'ina was really a word like (resembling) your saying "'atina" (give us). And concerning (the words revealed) about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "Hear, without being made to hear" [Al-Nisa: 46], he said: They (the Jews) would say: "La sami'ta" (may you not hear), and about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) they would say: "Isma', la sami'ta" (hear, may you not hear). He said: "And if they had said: We hear and obey, and hear (us) and look at us, it would have been better for them" [Al-Nisa: 46].
