The narrator Razin al-Jurjani said: I asked Sa'id bin Jubayr about this verse, "And (also forbidden to you are) married women" [Al-Nisa: 24], and he said: "I have no knowledge of it." Then I asked al-Dahhak bin Muzahim and mentioned what Sa'id bin Jubayr had said, and he said: "I bear witness that I myself heard him (Sa'id bin Jubayr) asking Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) this question." Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: This verse was revealed on the day of Khaybar. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gained victory, the Muslims obtained (as captives) women of the People of the Book who had husbands (among the disbelievers). When a man wanted to go to one of these women, she would say: "I have a husband." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about this, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "And (also forbidden to you are) married women" [Al-Nisa: 24], to the end of the verse, meaning the captive woman from the polytheists who is taken; there is no harm in relations with her. The narrator said: I mentioned this to Sa'id bin Jubayr, and he said: "He spoke the truth."
