Abdullah bin Muhayriz (may Allah have mercy on him), who was an orphan under the care of Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) and whom he equipped (with provisions for the journey) and sent off to Syria, narrates: I said to Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him): I am going to Syria, and I fear that I will be asked about your adhan. So he told me, saying: I set out with a group of people. We were at some point on the road when the mu'adhdhin of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called the adhan for prayer in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). We heard the voice of the mu'adhdhin while we were near him (peace and blessings be upon him), so we shouted, imitating it (with raised voices), so that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would hear our voices. He (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for us, and we stood before him (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Which of you is the one whose voice I heard rising?" All the people pointed at me, and they spoke the truth. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) let all of them go and kept me back, and said: "Stand up and call the adhan for prayer." I stood up, and at that time nothing was more hateful to me than the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and what he (peace and blessings be upon him) was ordering me to do. I stood before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) himself taught me the words of the adhan. He said: Say: "Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah." Then he said to me: "Go back and draw out your voice, and say: Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, Hayya ala al-salah, Hayya ala al-salah, Hayya ala al-falah, Hayya ala al-falah, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, La ilaha illallah." Then, when I had finished the adhan, he (peace and blessings be upon him) called me and gave me a purse containing some silver. Then he placed his blessed hand on the forelock of Abu Mahdhurah, then passed it over his face, from the front, then over (the place of) his liver; then the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the purse of Abu Mahdhurah. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah bless you, and send down blessings upon you." I said: O Messenger of Allah, order me to call the adhan in Makkah. He said: "I have done so." And all the dislike that had been in my heart regarding the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went away, and all of it turned into love for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then I came to Attab bin Usayd, the governor of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and called the adhan for prayer with him by the order of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I set out with ten young men along with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) towards Hunayn, and they (the Muslims) were the most hateful of people to us. They called the adhan, and we stood up to mock them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring these young men to me." Then he said: "Call the adhan." So they called the adhan, and I was the last of them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, this is the one whose voice I heard. Go and call the adhan for the people of Makkah, and say to Attab bin Usayd: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has ordered me to call the adhan for the people of Makkah." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his hand over his forelock, then said: "Say: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, twice; then go back and say: Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, twice; Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, twice; Hayya ala al-salah, twice; Hayya ala al-falah, twice; Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, La ilaha illallah. And when you call the first adhan of the morning, say: Al-salatu khayrun min al-nawm, al-salatu khayrun min al-nawm (Prayer is better than sleep). And when you say the iqamah, say it twice as well: Qad qamat al-salah (The prayer has been established). Did you hear?" So Abu Mahdhurah would neither cut his forelock nor part it, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had passed his hand over it.
