It is narrated from Zadhan and Abu Harb bin Abi al-Aswad that one day some people were in the presence of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and found him in a cheerful mood, so they said: "O Commander of the Believers, tell us something about your companions." He said: "About which of my companions?" The people said: "About the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." He said: "All the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) are my companions too, so which of them do you wish to ask about?" The people said: "About those particular individuals whom we see you treat with more affection and distinction than other people in mentioning them with good and praying for them." He asked: "Who are they?" The people said: "Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)." He said: "He learned the Sunnah and recited the Qur'an, and that is sufficient for him in terms of knowledge."
The narrator said that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) ended his words with this sentence, and the people could not understand what he meant by 'that is sufficient in terms of knowledge': was it that Abdullah bin Mas'ud's (may Allah be pleased with him) knowledge was sufficient, or that the Qur'an was sufficient for gaining knowledge?
The people asked: "And what do you say about Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He said: "He knew the names of the hypocrites, or was taught them, and he used to keep asking about complex and difficult matters until he understood them fully; so if you ask him about these matters, you will find him an expert scholar of them."
The people asked: "And Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He said: "He was a vessel filled with knowledge. He was extremely sparing and cautious in the matter of his religion and extremely eager to acquire knowledge. He used to ask many questions; sometimes knowledge was given to him and sometimes it was withheld. Know that his vessel was filled with knowledge until it became completely full."
The people asked: "And Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He said: "He is a man of truth who is from us, the People of the House, and one of us. Where will you find someone like Luqman the Wise? He learned the first knowledge and attained the last knowledge; he read the first scriptures and the last Book, and he was an ocean that never runs dry."
The people asked: "And Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He said: "He is a person into whose flesh, blood, bones, hair and skin Allah Almighty has blended faith. He does not part from the truth for a single moment; wherever the truth turns, he turns with it. It is not permissible for the Fire of Hell to consume any part of his body."
The people said: "O Commander of the Believers, now tell us something about yourself."
He said: "Wait! Allah Almighty Himself has forbidden praising oneself."
The narrator said that at this someone said: "But Allah Almighty says: 'And as for the favour of your Lord, proclaim it' [Surah al-Duha: 11]," so Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then I will tell you, speaking of the favour of my Lord, the Blessed and Exalted: my state was such that when I asked, I was given knowledge, and when I remained silent, conversation was begun with me; and between my two sides, that is, in my breast, abundant knowledge has been filled."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the two tribes of the Ansar, al-Aws and al-Khazraj, boasted before each other, recounting their virtues. The tribe of al-Aws said: "Among us is Hanzalah bin Abi Amir (may Allah be pleased with him), whom the angels washed (after his martyrdom); among us is Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), at whose death the Throne of the Most Merciful shook; among us is Asim bin Thabit bin Abi al-Aqlah (may Allah be pleased with him), whose (body) a swarm of hornets protected (from the disbelievers); and among us is Khuzaymah bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), whose testimony alone the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) declared equal to the testimony of two men." In reply the tribe of al-Khazraj (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "Among us are four eminent persons who collected the entire Qur'an (by memory and in writing) in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and no one besides them collected it (in this way): they are Zayd bin Thabit, Abu Zayd, Ubayy bin Ka'b and Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with them)."
Al-Bazzar recorded it through Abd al-Wahhab bin Ata, and its origin is in Sahih al-Bukhari.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was stabbed (in an assassination attempt) and ordered the formation of a council (Shura) (to decide the caliphate), the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), came to him and said: "O my father, the people are claiming that these six persons are not acceptable (for the caliphate)."
At this Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Prop me up." So the people supported him and sat him up, and he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "What (objection) could they possibly raise about Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him)?! I myself heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'O Ali, your hand is in my hand; you will enter with me on the Day of Resurrection wherever I enter.' What could they possibly say about Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)?! I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'On the day Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) dies, the angels of the heaven will pray the funeral prayer over him.' I said: O Messenger of Allah, is this virtue specifically for Uthman or general for all people? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'It is specifically for Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).' What could they possibly say about Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him)?! One night I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) speak when his (peace and blessings be upon him) saddle had fallen; he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Who will set my saddle right for me and in return become worthy of Paradise?' So Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) rushed forward and set it right for him (peace and blessings be upon him) until he (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: 'O Talhah, this is Jibril (peace be upon him); he conveys greetings of peace to you and says: I will be with you in the terrors of the Day of Resurrection until I rescue you from them.'
What could they possibly say about al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him)?! I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sleeping, and al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) sat driving away (flies and the like) from his (peace and blessings be upon him) face until, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up, he said to him: 'O Abu Abdullah, have you remained here all along?' He said: Yes, may my father and mother be ransomed for you, I have remained here all along. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'This is Jibril (peace be upon him); he conveys greetings of peace to you and says: I will be with you on the Day of Resurrection until I drive away the sparks of the Fire from your face.'
What could they possibly say about Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him)?! I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of the Battle of Badr, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) had strung his bow fourteen times; he (peace and blessings be upon him) kept handing the bow to him and saying: 'Shoot, may my father and mother be ransomed for you!'
And what could they possibly say about Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him)?! I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he was sitting in the house of Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), and al-Hasan and al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) were crying and writhing from intense hunger. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Who will bring us something (to eat)?' Just then Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) appeared with a bowl containing hays (a sweet dish of dates, ghee and cheese) and two loaves of bread with a relish (melted fat) between them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: 'May Allah Almighty suffice you in the affairs of your world; as for the matter of your Hereafter, I am its guarantor.'"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Muhammad, indeed Allah Almighty loves three of your Companions, so you love them too: (they are) Ali bin Abi Talib, Abu Dharr and al-Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with them)." The narrator said: Then Jibril (peace be upon him) came again and said: "O Muhammad, indeed Paradise greatly longs for three of your Companions." At that time Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he wished in his heart that this virtue might be for some of the Ansar. He wanted to ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about these fortunate ones, but could not ask because of his (peace and blessings be upon him) awe and majesty. So he went out and met Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Abu Bakr, I was just now with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when Jibril (peace be upon him) came and said that Paradise longs for three of his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions. I hoped that they might be from the Ansar, but out of awe I could not ask him (peace and blessings be upon him). Would you go in and ask him about them?" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "I fear that I might ask and my name not be among them, and then my people would taunt and reproach me."
Then Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) met Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to him what he had said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), but Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the same answer that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had given. Then he met Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) (and mentioned the same), and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes, I will certainly ask. If I am among them, I will praise Allah Almighty, and if I am not among them, (I will be content with Allah's will) and it will do no harm." Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went in and said: "O Messenger of Allah, Anas has told me that he was with you just now when Jibril (peace be upon him) came and said that Paradise longs for three of your Companions. So, O Prophet of Allah, who are they?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali, you are among them; the second is Ammar bin Yasir, who will take part with you in battles whose virtue is evident and whose good and blessing are immense; and the third is Salman al-Farisi, who is from us, the People of the House. He is a true well-wisher and a sincere person, so take him (as a close companion) for yourself."
Abu Ya'la and al-Bazzar recorded this hadith, and al-Bazzar commented that al-Nadr bin Humayd and Sa'd al-Iskaf are not strong narrators, and that no one reported this narration except Ja'far bin Sulayman.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We, the community of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when we were present in large numbers and gathered together, used to say among ourselves: "The most excellent and distinguished person of this Ummah after its Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is Abu Bakr, then Umar, then Uthman" (may Allah be pleased with them), "and after that we would fall silent."

It is narrated from Imam Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) recited on the pulpit these words of Allah Almighty: "Gardens of Eden" [Surah Maryam: 61], then he said: "None will enter it except one who is either a prophet: 'Congratulations to you, O occupant of the grave (the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him))!' (and he pointed towards the blessed grave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)), or one who is a siddiq (truthful one): 'Congratulations to you, O Abu Bakr!', or one who is a martyr; and how could Umar ever attain martyrdom! Yet the One who brought me out of my house at al-Hathmah is certainly able to bring martyrdom (by itself) to me."
The chain of this report is hasan (good); Ibn Abi Shaybah recorded it in al-Musannaf (34674) and Ahmad in Fada'il al-Sahabah (573).
