It is narrated from Sayyiduna Shaddad bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Abu Bakr is the most tender-hearted and the most merciful of my Ummah; Umar is the boldest and the most just of my Ummah; Uthman is the most modest and the most generous of my Ummah; Ali is the most intelligent and wise and the bravest of my Ummah; Abdullah bin Mas'ud is the most righteous and the most trustworthy of my Ummah; Abu Dharr is the most abstinent and the most truthful of my Ummah; Abu al-Darda' is the most forgiving and the most God-fearing of my Ummah; and Mu'awiyah is the most forbearing and the most generous of my Ummah."
Ibn Asakir recorded this hadith in Tarikh Dimashq; however, its chain contains Bashir bin Zadhan, a da'if (weak) narrator, because of which this narration is weak in its chain.
