It is narrated from Zadhan and Abu Harb bin Abi al-Aswad that one day some people were in the presence of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and found him in a cheerful mood, so they said: "O Commander of the Believers, tell us something about your companions." He said: "About which of my companions?" The people said: "About the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." He said: "All the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) are my companions too, so which of them do you wish to ask about?" The people said: "About those particular individuals whom we see you treat with more affection and distinction than other people in mentioning them with good and praying for them." He asked: "Who are they?" The people said: "Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)." He said: "He learned the Sunnah and recited the Qur'an, and that is sufficient for him in terms of knowledge."
The narrator said that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) ended his words with this sentence, and the people could not understand what he meant by 'that is sufficient in terms of knowledge': was it that Abdullah bin Mas'ud's (may Allah be pleased with him) knowledge was sufficient, or that the Qur'an was sufficient for gaining knowledge?
The people asked: "And what do you say about Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He said: "He knew the names of the hypocrites, or was taught them, and he used to keep asking about complex and difficult matters until he understood them fully; so if you ask him about these matters, you will find him an expert scholar of them."
The people asked: "And Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He said: "He was a vessel filled with knowledge. He was extremely sparing and cautious in the matter of his religion and extremely eager to acquire knowledge. He used to ask many questions; sometimes knowledge was given to him and sometimes it was withheld. Know that his vessel was filled with knowledge until it became completely full."
The people asked: "And Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He said: "He is a man of truth who is from us, the People of the House, and one of us. Where will you find someone like Luqman the Wise? He learned the first knowledge and attained the last knowledge; he read the first scriptures and the last Book, and he was an ocean that never runs dry."
The people asked: "And Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He said: "He is a person into whose flesh, blood, bones, hair and skin Allah Almighty has blended faith. He does not part from the truth for a single moment; wherever the truth turns, he turns with it. It is not permissible for the Fire of Hell to consume any part of his body."
The people said: "O Commander of the Believers, now tell us something about yourself."
He said: "Wait! Allah Almighty Himself has forbidden praising oneself."
The narrator said that at this someone said: "But Allah Almighty says: 'And as for the favour of your Lord, proclaim it' [Surah al-Duha: 11]," so Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then I will tell you, speaking of the favour of my Lord, the Blessed and Exalted: my state was such that when I asked, I was given knowledge, and when I remained silent, conversation was begun with me; and between my two sides, that is, in my breast, abundant knowledge has been filled."
