It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a man who was performing ablution and washing his leather socks (instead of wiping them). He (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured with his blessed hand like this and said: "You were only commanded to wipe," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) spread apart the fingers of his blessed palms and passed them over his leather socks (by way of wiping) to show him.
Imam Ibn Majah narrated it; however, it is not among the narrations we have heard (in our transmission).

The narrator says: He was asked about this: "How do you command (others) to wipe?" He replied: "How bad it would be for me if its ease and benefit were for you and its burden fell upon me! I have certainly seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wipe himself and command it, but ablution (that is, washing the feet completely) has been made more beloved to me."
Its chain is sahih.

It is narrated from Sahl bin Abi Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf al-Ansari that a man from the people of Syria asked his father, Abu Umamah, about wiping over leather socks (khuffs), and he replied: "Yes, wipe over them."
The Syrian man asked: Then what about the statement of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)? (That is, what is the standing of the contrary statement reported from him?) At that my father said to me: O my dear son, go to Sa'id bin al-Musayyib and tell him what this man has said! Sahl said: So I went to Sa'id bin al-Musayyib and said: My father sends you greetings of peace and asks you about wiping over leather socks. He said: "If you put them on while your feet were pure (in a state of ablution), then keep wiping over them until you take them off."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey. He (peace and blessings be upon him) got up in the darkness of the last part of the night and asked: "O Anas, is there water in your vessel?" I said: Yes. (Then) he (peace and blessings be upon him) went off to one side and relieved himself, and I poured water for his (peace and blessings be upon him) ablution, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to wipe, I bent my back so that I could see (closely) what he (peace and blessings be upon him) would do. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said (seeing my curiosity): "It is what you see," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over his two leather socks.
In the chain of this narration, Imam Ahmad bin Mani' was in doubt over the name of the narrator, "Ziyad bin Ubaydah" or "Ubaydah"; nevertheless, wiping over leather socks is an authentic Sunnah whose basis is found in the books of Sahih collections.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Usamah bin Sharik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "When we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey, we would not take off our leather socks for three days and their nights, even after relieving our needs (ablution and answering the call of nature); and when we were with him (peace and blessings be upon him) as residents, we would wipe over our leather socks for a day and a night."
Imam Abu Ya'la narrated this hadith through two routes: the first route is through Umar bin Abdullah bin Ya'la bin Murrah from his father and grandfather (Ya'la bin Murrah, may Allah be pleased with him), while the second route is through Ziyad bin Ilaqah from Sayyiduna Usamah bin Sharik (may Allah be pleased with him).
