قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْحَنَفِيُّ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَامِرٍ الْخَزَّازِ ، ثَنَا الْحَسَنُ ، عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : " رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَالَ ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ حَتَّى تَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ ، وَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى خُفِّهِ الْأَيْمَنِ ، وَيَدَهُ الْيُسْرَى عَلَى خُفِّهِ الْأَيْسَرِ ، ثُمَّ مَسَحَ أَعْلَاهُمَا مَسْحَةً وَاحِدَةً ، كَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى أَثَرِ أَصَابِعِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ " .
قُلْتُ : حَدِيثُ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فِي الْمَسْحِ فِي الْكُتُبِ السِّتَّةِ بِغَيْرِ هَذَا السِّيَاقِ ، وَأَبُو عَامِرٍ الْخَزَّازُ اسْمُهُ صَالِحُ بْنُ رُسْتُمَ فِيهِ ضَعْفٌ ، وَالْحَسَنُ لَمْ يَسْمَعْ عِنْدِي مِنَ الْمُغِيرَةِ .
قُلْتُ : حَدِيثُ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فِي الْمَسْحِ فِي الْكُتُبِ السِّتَّةِ بِغَيْرِ هَذَا السِّيَاقِ ، وَأَبُو عَامِرٍ الْخَزَّازُ اسْمُهُ صَالِحُ بْنُ رُسْتُمَ فِيهِ ضَعْفٌ ، وَالْحَسَنُ لَمْ يَسْمَعْ عِنْدِي مِنَ الْمُغِيرَةِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) relieve himself, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came and performed ablution and wiped over his two leather socks. He (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his right hand on his right leather sock and his left hand on his left leather sock, then wiped over the upper part of both in a single wipe. It is as if I can still see the traces and marks of the blessed fingers of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on those leather socks."
I (Ibn Hajar) say: The hadith of Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) on wiping over leather socks is recorded in the Six Books in wording other than this context and style. In its chain is Abu Amir al-Khazzaz, whose name is Salih bin Rustam, and there is weakness in him in terms of scholarly (hadith) standards. Moreover, in my view Imam al-Hasan al-Basri did not hear from Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him).

وَقَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا فُضَيْلُ بْنُ عِيَاضٍ ، عَنْ هِشَامٍ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ : " الْمَسْحُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ ، خَطَّطَ بِالْأَصَابِعِ " .
( 7 ) وَحَدِيثُ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ تَقَدَّمَ أَوَّلَ الْبَابِ .

It is narrated from Imam al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: "The method of wiping over leather socks is that lines are drawn over them with the fingers."
And the hadith of Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) has already passed at the beginning of this chapter.
