It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey. He (peace and blessings be upon him) got up in the darkness of the last part of the night and asked: "O Anas, is there water in your vessel?" I said: Yes. (Then) he (peace and blessings be upon him) went off to one side and relieved himself, and I poured water for his (peace and blessings be upon him) ablution, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to wipe, I bent my back so that I could see (closely) what he (peace and blessings be upon him) would do. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said (seeing my curiosity): "It is what you see," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over his two leather socks.
In the chain of this narration, Imam Ahmad bin Mani' was in doubt over the name of the narrator, "Ziyad bin Ubaydah" or "Ubaydah"; nevertheless, wiping over leather socks is an authentic Sunnah whose basis is found in the books of Sahih collections.
