Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no harm upon you if you do not marvel at anyone until you see what his end will be. A doer may do righteous deeds for a long period of his life, deeds such that if he died upon them he would enter Paradise, and then he turns and begins doing evil deeds. And a servant may do evil deeds for a long period, such that if he died upon them he would go to Hell, but then he turns and begins doing righteous deeds. When Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, intends good for a servant, He employs him before his death." The people said: "O Messenger of Allah, how does He employ him?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He grants him the ability to do a righteous deed and then takes his soul upon it."
Ahmad, Abu Ya'la and al-Bazzar recorded it, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) relates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man keeps doing the deeds of the people of Paradise while in the Preserved Tablet his name is among the people of Hell, and then he dies and goes to Hell. And a person keeps doing the deeds of the people of Hell, while in the Preserved Tablet his name is among the people of Paradise; then, before he dies, the man turns and begins doing the deeds of the people of Paradise, and dies in that state and enters Paradise."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us holding something in his fist. He opened his right hand and said: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is a writing from the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. In it are the people of Paradise, their number, their names and their lineages, all those who will be until the Day of Resurrection. None will be decreased from them and none will be added to them. Sometimes a fortunate person is made to walk the path of wretchedness, until it is said: 'He is one of them (the wretched), and how much he resembles them!' But then he moves to his fortune before he dies, even if it is only as long before his death as the interval between two milkings of a she-camel." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) opened his left hand and said: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This writing is from the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. In it are the people of Hell, their number and their names; all who will be until the Day of Resurrection are mentioned in it. None will be decreased from them and none will be added to them. Those who are wretched walk the paths of the fortunate, and it is said that they are among the (fortunate), and how much they resemble them! But then wretchedness overtakes one of them before his death, even if it is as long before as the interval between two milkings of a she-camel." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Deeds are judged by their endings." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Abdullah bin Maymun al-Qaddah, who is extremely da'if (weak). Al-Bazzar said: he is salih (acceptable). The rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit and, after praising and extolling Allah Almighty, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is a Book in which Allah Almighty has written the people of Paradise, their names and their lineages, all of them. Nothing will be added to it and nothing taken away from it until the Day of Resurrection. The one destined for Paradise has been sealed with the deeds of the people of Paradise, and the one destined for Hell has been sealed with the deeds of the people of Hell, whatever deeds he may do. (Sometimes it happens that) a person who is among the people of fortune walks the path of the people of wretchedness, until it is said: 'How much he resembles them; rather, he is one of them (the wretched)!' Then fortune overtakes him and rescues him. Likewise, a person belonging to the wretched walks the path of the fortunate, until it is said: 'How much he resembles them; rather, he is one of them (the fortunate)!' And then wretchedness reaches him. Whomever Allah Almighty has written as fortunate in the Preserved Tablet, Allah Almighty will not take him out of this world until He employs him in a deed that makes him fortunate before his death, even if it is only as long before his death as the interval between two milkings of a she-camel." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Deeds are judged by their endings, deeds are judged by their endings." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times. Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said about a man: "He is of the people of Hell." The people began waiting to see what would become of him. When the Battle of Hunayn came, that man fought fiercely. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was told about it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is of the people of Hell." Then the man went out, took an arrow from his quiver and killed himself with it. The people said: "O Messenger of Allah, Allah Almighty has shown your word to be true." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is of the people of Hell." We said: "O Messenger of Allah, if so-and-so, with his worship, his striving and his gentleness, is in Hell, then what will become of us?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He has concealed hypocrisy, and he is in Hell." The narrator says: During the battle we kept watch over him. Whenever any horseman or foot soldier passed by him, he would attack him, and he himself was wounded many times. We came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, so-and-so has attained martyrdom." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is in Hell." The narrator says: When the pain of his wounds became severe, that man took his sword, placed it on his chest and then leaned his weight on it until the sword came out through his back. I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "I bear witness that you are truly the Messenger of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man outwardly does the deeds of the people of Paradise while he is of the people of Hell, and a man outwardly does the deeds of the people of Hell while he is of the people of Paradise. Wretchedness or fortune overtakes him as his soul departs, and his end is sealed according to it (that particular state)."

Abd al-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Ka'b bin Malik narrates that a man who was present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the Battle of Khaybar told him: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said about one of the men who were with him: 'This man is of the people of Hell.' When the fighting came, that man fought most fiercely until he received many wounds. Some of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, have you seen the man about whom you mentioned that he is of the people of Hell? By Allah, he has fought most fiercely in the path of Allah and received many wounds.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'He is indeed of the people of Hell.'
