Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Standing guard (ribat) for one day is better than a month of voluntary fasting and night prayers."
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains Ibn Lahi'ah, whose hadith is hasan (good), though there is weakness in him.

In one narration the words are: "And he is kept safe from the trial of the grave."

Sayyidah Umm al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with her) reports this as a marfu' hadith (the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said): "Whoever stands guard at any of the Muslims' coasts for three days, that suffices him for a year of standing guard (i.e., he receives the reward of a year of guarding)."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it through the narration of Isma'il bin Ayyash from the people of Madinah, and the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever stands guard for one night on the seashore, that is more excellent than his worshipping in his own home for a thousand years, (such years) that a year is three hundred and sixty days and every day is a thousand years." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
Ibn Majah recorded it, except that he did not record the words: "on the seashore."
Abu Ya'la recorded it; its chain contains Sa'id bin Khalid bin Abi Tawil al-Qurashi, who is da'if (weak). Although Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy), he said in his book al-Du'afa': It is not permissible to use him as evidence.

Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) report that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever dies while standing guard in the path of Allah, the deeds of a fasting person continue (to be recorded) for him, his provision continues for him, he is kept safe from the trial (of the grave), and when Allah Almighty raises him on the Day of Resurrection he will be safe from the Greatest Terror (i.e., the horror of the Day of Resurrection)." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) was recorded by Ibn Majah.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Abdullah bin Salih, whom Abd al-Malik bin Shu'ayb declared thiqah (trustworthy), saying: He is thiqah and ma'mun (trustworthy and reliable). Others declared him da'if (weak). The rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever fasts one day in the path of Allah, Allah Almighty removes him from Hell by a distance of seventy years; and whoever dies while standing guard is saved from the trial of the grave, and his provision continues for him." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) and Ibn Majah recorded only the part of this narration about fasting.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Rishdin bin Sa'd, who is da'if (weak).
This narration is strengthened by mutaba'at (corroborating chains).

Whoever dies while standing guard in the path of Allah will be safe from the Greatest Terror; he is provided with his provision and given the fragrance (or breeze) of Paradise, and the reward of a mujahid continues for him until Allah Almighty raises him again (on the Day of Resurrection)."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Shurahbil bin al-Simt narrates that he saw Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) standing guard on the coast of Hims, and said: What are you doing? He said: I am standing guard. Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Standing guard for one day in the path of Allah is like a month of voluntary fasting and night prayer. Whoever dies while standing guard, Allah Almighty continues for him the deeds he used to do, he is kept safe from the trial (of the grave), and he will be raised on the Day of Resurrection as a martyr."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains narrators whom I do not know.
