Shurahbil bin al-Simt narrates that he saw Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) standing guard on the coast of Hims, and said: What are you doing? He said: I am standing guard. Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Standing guard for one day in the path of Allah is like a month of voluntary fasting and night prayer. Whoever dies while standing guard, Allah Almighty continues for him the deeds he used to do, he is kept safe from the trial (of the grave), and he will be raised on the Day of Resurrection as a martyr."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains narrators whom I do not know.
