Abu Labid Limazah bin Ziyad says: In the time of al-Hajjaj, horses were sent out (for a race), and al-Hakam bin Ayyub was the governor of Basrah in those days. We said: What if we went to the race? So we went there. Then we thought: We should first go to Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) and ask him whether you people used to hold horse races in the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator says: We asked him, and he said: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took part in a race on a horse called Subhah; it got ahead of the people, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delighted by that and was pleased with it.
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it, but he reported these words: We came to Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was in his palace at al-Zawiyah, and we asked him: O Abu Hamzah, did you people take part in horse races in the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? Or did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) take part in horse races? He replied: Yes.
