Rulers of oppression and tyranny and rulers of misguidance

Sayyiduna Jubayr bin Mut'im (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once I was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the "Hatim" (al-Hijr), when al-Hakam bin Abi al-As passed by. The Prophet said: "Woe to my Ummah because of the (offspring) that is in this man's loins."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator whom I do not know.

Abdullah al-Bahi, the freed slave of Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: I was in the mosque while Marwan was delivering the sermon. Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) did not appoint anyone from his family as his deputy (or successor)." Marwan said: "You are the one about whom this verse was revealed: 'And the one who said to his parents: Uff to you both.'" Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You have lied! Rather, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed your father."
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its chain is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The affair of my Ummah will continue upon justice until the first to breach it is a man from Banu Umayyah called Yazid."
Abu Ya'la and al-Bazzar recorded it; the narrators of Abu Ya'la are the narrators of the Sahih, except that Makhul did not reach the time of Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a house in which there were twelve men, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In this house there is someone whose fitnah (trial) for my Ummah will be worse than the fitnah of the Dajjal."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Muslim bin Kaysan, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There will be a caliph who, along with his offspring, will be among the people of Hell."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator whom I do not know.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came early to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abu al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Abu al-Hasan! Come close to me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drew him so close that he put his mouth to his ear. Then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from the left side, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head as if alarmed and said: "The wicked one has knocked at the door." He said: "O Abu al-Hasan! Go and lead him here the way a goat is led to be milked." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) brought al-Hakam with him, holding him by his head and ears, and brought him and made him stand before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed him three times. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Seat him in a corner!" Then some of the Muhajirun and Ansar came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for al-Hakam and said: "This man will soon oppose the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet, and from his loins will come one whose fitnah will send its smoke up to the sky." A man from among the Muslims said: "Allah Almighty and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) have spoken the truth; but these people are too few in number and too low in standing for that to be their state." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It will be so, and at that time some of you will be his partisans."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Hasan bin Qays al-Rahbi, who is da'if (weak).

Nasr bin Asim reports from his father, who narrates: I entered the Prophet's Mosque, and some people were saying: "We seek refuge with Allah Almighty from the anger of Allah Almighty and the anger of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)." I asked: "What has happened?" The people said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon on his pulpit. Meanwhile a man stood up, took his son by the hand and led him out of the mosque. The Prophet said: 'May Allah Almighty curse the one who leads and the one who is led. One day this Ummah will be ruined, and it will be because of so-and-so, the one who is behind.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Amr bin Murrah al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him), who had the honour of being a Companion, narrates: Once al-Hakam bin Abi al-As asked permission to come in to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recognised his voice, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give him permission! Upon him be the curse of Allah Almighty, the angels and all mankind, and a curse also upon those who will come out of his loins, except for those among them who are righteous, and such people will be few. They (that is, those who come from his loins) will hold prominent standing in this world and will be destitute in the Hereafter; they will be people of deception and deceit."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in this way. Another narration has the wording: "And a curse also upon whoever comes out of his loins, except that the ruling of the righteous among them is different, and they will be few." Its chain contains a narrator, Abu al-Hasan al-Jazari, who is mastur (of unknown standing), and the rest of the narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Abdullah bin Mawhab narrates that he was with Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him). Marwan came to him and spoke with him about his needs. He said: "O Commander of the Believers! Fulfil my need, for by Allah my expenses are great: I am the father of ten, the brother of ten and the paternal uncle of ten." When Marwan left, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting with Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) on his couch. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Ibn Abbas! I ask you by Allah: do you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'When the sons of Abu al-Hakam reach thirty, they will make the verses of Allah Almighty a commodity passed among themselves, they will make the servants of Allah slaves, and they will meddle with His Book; and when they reach four hundred and ninety-seven, their destruction will come faster than (the eating of) a date'?" Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Allah knows; yes!" Marwan had mentioned a need of his. Then Marwan sent Abd al-Malik back to Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he spoke with him about it. When he left, Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Ibn Abbas! I ask you by Allah: do you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned this man and said: 'This is the father of four tyrants'?" Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Allah knows; yes!" The narrator states: It was for this reason that Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) claimed Ziyad (as his brother).
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah, in whom there is weakness, and his hadith is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet said: "The first person to appear through this door will be a man of Hell." Then so-and-so appeared. In one narration the wording is: "A man will surely appear before you who will be raised on the Day of Resurrection upon other than my Sunnah (the narrator is in doubt, or perhaps the wording is:) upon other than my religion." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I had left my father at home, and I feared that he might be the one meant; but then another man came, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is this one." Al-Tabarani recorded the whole of it; its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Rahawayh, whose hadith is sound (mustaqim); there is weakness in him, but it is not clearly specified. The rest of the narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Al-Hakam bin Abi al-As was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to speak, he started twitching. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him and said: "Remain like that!" And that man continued to suffer from twitching until he died.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Dirar bin Surad, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was made caliph, he was spoken to about al-Hakam bin Abi al-As. He said: "I will not untie a knot that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has tied."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Hammad bin Isa al-Absi, about whom al-Dhahabi says there is obscurity (jahalah) in him, and the rest of the narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw in a dream that the children of al-Hakam were climbing up and down his (peace and blessings be upon him) pulpit. In the morning he was angry, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why is it that I saw the sons of al-Hakam leaping onto my pulpit like monkeys?" The narrator states: After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was never seen laughing heartily until his (peace and blessings be upon him) passing.
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Mus'ab bin Abdullah bin al-Zubayr, who is thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In a dream I was shown Banu Marwan taking turns climbing up and down my pulpit, and that displeased me. Then I saw Banu al-Abbas climbing up and down my pulpit, and that pleased me."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Zayd bin Mu'awiyah, who is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyidah Umm Hakim bint Amr bin Sinan (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Al-Ash'ath bin Qays asked permission to come in to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Qanbar turned him back and bloodied his nose. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came out and said: "O Ash'ath! What contest do you have with him? By Allah! Had you quarrelled with a slave of the Thaqif tribe, even the hairs of your private parts would have trembled." He was asked: "O Commander of the Believers! Who is the slave of Thaqif?" He said: "He will be a slave who will become ruler over the people and will bring humiliation into every household of the Arabs." He was asked: "For how long will he rule?" He replied: "Twenty years, if he reaches it."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, al-Ajlah al-Kindi, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), while Ahmad and others declared him da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Banu al-Abbas will have two banners; the upper (part) of them will be disbelief and the (part) where they are planted will be misguidance. If you encounter it, do not go astray."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Yazid bin Rabi'ah, who is matruk (abandoned) and has been accused of fabricating hadith, while Ibn Adi says: "There is no harm in him."

Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What have I to do with Banu al-Abbas? They will lead my Ummah, shed their blood and clothe them in black garments. Allah Almighty will clothe them in the garments of the Fire."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Zayd bin Rabi'ah, the discussion of whom has already passed.

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Banners will come out from the direction of the east for Banu al-Abbas; the first part of them will be ruined and the last cut off. Do not help those people; may Allah Almighty not help them. Whoever walks under any of their banners, Allah Almighty will admit him into Hell on the Day of Resurrection. Beware! Those people will be the worst of Allah's creation, and their followers will be the worst of Allah's creation. They will claim that they are connected to me, whereas I am free of them and they are free of me. Their signs are that they will grow their hair long and wear black clothing. Do not sit with them in gatherings, do not buy and sell with them in the markets, do not show them the way and do not give them water to drink. The people of the heavens will be distressed by their saying of takbir."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Anbasah bin Abi Saghirah, who has been accused of lying.
