Isma'il bin Umayyah relates this statement of his grandfather: There was a slave whose name was Tahman, or perhaps Dhakwan. His grandfather freed his own share of him. That slave came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and spoke to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are free in your neck, and you are a slave in your neck (that is, you are partly free and partly a slave)." The narrator says: So that slave kept serving his master until he died.
Imam Ahmad recorded this narration, and
this narration is mursal, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration and said: from Isma'il bin Umayyah, from his father, from his grandfather. He
recorded this narration by way of Abdullah bin Ahmad, from his father, with his chain; so it is possible that these words dropped out of my copy, namely that he narrated it from his father, from his grandfather. And Allah knows best.
