Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 7284

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Sinan al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man may free as much of his slave as he wishes: if he wishes, he may free a third of him, and if he wishes, a quarter."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and he states: "If he wishes, he may free a fifth; there is no compulsion (or coercion) between him and Allah Almighty." The chain of this narration contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Fada', who is da'if (weak).
