Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about borrowing kneaded dough and bread, and he said: "Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah)! This is part of good character. Take a small one and give back a large one, or take a large one and give back a small one; and the best among you are those who repay in a good manner."
At-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Sulayman bin Salamah al-Khaba'iri, who has been accused of lying.

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) bought a camel, or some camels, from a Bedouin in exchange for one wasq of dhakhirah dates; dhakhirah means Ajwah dates. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went back to his house and looked for the dates, but he did not find them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went back to that man and said to him: "O servant of Allah! We bought a camel from you (the narrator is uncertain; perhaps the words are:) some camels, in exchange for one wasq of Ajwah dates. We looked for it, but we did not find them." The Bedouin said: "What betrayal is this?" The people scolded him and said: "May Allah Almighty destroy you! Are you calling the Messenger of Allah a betrayer?" Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave him alone, for the one who is owed a right also has the right to speak." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him again: "O servant of Allah! We bought your camels from you, and we thought that we had what we had named to you, but when we looked for it, we did not find it." The Bedouin said: "What betrayal is this?" The people scolded him and said: "May Allah Almighty destroy you! Are you calling the Messenger of Allah a betrayer?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave him alone, for the one who is owed a right also has the right to speak." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated his words to him two or three times. When he saw that the man was not understanding him, he said to a man from among his companions: "Go to Khawlah bint Hakim bin Umayyah and say to her: 'If you have one wasq of Ajwah dates, lend it to us; if Allah wills, we will repay you.'" That man went to her, then came back and said: "She says: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah! I have them; send someone to me to take possession of them.'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take this man with you and pay him in full." The narrator says: He took him along and paid him in full. Then the Bedouin passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was sitting among his companions, and the Bedouin said: "May Allah Almighty reward you with good! You have paid in full and done well." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection, the best of Allah Almighty's servants in the sight of Allah will be those who pay in full and in a good manner."
Ahmad and al-Bazzar recorded it, and Ahmad's chain is sahih (authentic).

Sayyidah Khawlah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of Sayyiduna Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) owed one wasq of dates to a man from Banu Sa'idah. That man came to him and demanded payment. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered a man from the Ansar to pay him, and he paid him in dates that were inferior to the man's dates, so the man refused to take them. The Ansari said: "Are you turning back the word of the Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Yes! Who has more right to act justly than the Messenger of Allah?" Then tears flowed from the eyes of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "He has spoken the truth; who has more right to act justly than I? Allah Almighty does not grant purity to a nation whose weak person does not take his right from the strong one without difficulty." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Khawlah! Give him food, give him oil, and pay him, for whenever a creditor leaves his debtor satisfied, the creatures of the earth and the fish of the sea pray for mercy for (the debtor); and whenever a servant puts off his creditor while he has the means (to pay), Allah Almighty records a sin against that person every day."
At-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Hibban bin Ali, whom a group declared thiqah (trustworthy) while others called him da'if (weak).

Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a message to Sayyidah Khawlah bint Hakim (may Allah be pleased with her) and asked her for a loan of some dates, and she handed them over. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is how the servants of Allah pay in full. We did have dates, but they were dusty (or of an inferior kind)."

Sayyiduna Abu Humayd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) borrowed some fine dates from a man. When that man came to him and demanded payment, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We have nothing at the moment. If you give us time, then when something comes to us, we will pay you." The man said: "What betrayal is this?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was about to strike him, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave him alone, for the one who is owed a right also has the right to speak. Go to Khawlah bint Hakim al-Ansariyyah and ask her about dates." The people went, and that woman said: "O Messenger of Allah! I only have Ajwah dates." That man came and informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, and he said: "Take those and pay him." When they had paid that man, he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Have you received full payment?" He said: "Yes! You have paid in full, and paid well." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best servants of Allah from this Ummah are those who pay well."
