Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by (the chief of the hypocrites) Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul, who was sitting in the shade. He said: O son of Abu Kabshah, you have thrown dust on us. (Later) his son, Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) (who was a Companion of the Messenger), said (to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)): By the One who has honoured you and revealed the Book to you, if you wish, I will bring you his head (that is, the head of his own father, Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No. Treat your father with kindness and keep good company with him.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and he said: Zayd bin Bishr al-Hadrami is alone in narrating it. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy), and the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Silah bin Zufar relates: We said to Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him): How did you come to know the matter of the hypocrites, when none of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) could recognise it, not even Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) (could recognise it)? Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Once I was walking behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fell asleep on his mount. Meanwhile I heard some people saying: If we throw him (that is, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) off his mount, his neck will break and we will be rid of him. So I kept walking between those people and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I began reciting in a loud voice, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up. He asked: "Who is this?" I said: Hudhayfah! He asked: "Who are these people?" I told him: So-and-so, and so-and-so, until I had told him about all of them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did you hear what they said?" I said: Yes! That is why I am walking between you and these people. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Those people are so-and-so and so-and-so", until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had listed their names, and he said: "These are hypocrites; do not tell anyone."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Mujalid bin Sa'id, who suffered from confusion (ikhtilat) in his memory, and a group of scholars declared him da'if (weak).

قُلْتُ : فِي الصَّحِيحِ بَعْضُهُ .

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: I was holding the reins of the she-camel of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and leading it, while Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) was driving it from behind (the narrator is unsure, or perhaps the words are:) Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) was leading it and I was driving it from behind. Meanwhile 12 men came in front of us with their faces covered. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These are hypocrites until the Day of Resurrection." I said: O Messenger of Allah, why do you not send someone to each one of them and have them killed? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I dislike that people should say that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has his own companions killed. Soon the 'dubaylah' will suffice for them." We said: What is meant by the 'dubaylah'? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A flame of fire that will be placed upon the heart of one of them and will kill him." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of this (narration) is reported in the Sahih.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Abdullah bin Salamah, whom a group of scholars declared thiqah (trustworthy), while al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) says: His hadith is not corroborated.

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went through the low part of the valley, while the people went towards the mountain pass. Meanwhile seven men came with their faces covered. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw them, Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) was at that time leading the animal in front and Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) was driving it from behind. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take care of what is between the two of you." Those people did not do anything. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at those people and then said: "O Hudhayfah, do you know who these people are?" I said: Of them I recognise only the man with the red camel; I know that he is so-and-so.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) There is a hadith from him in the Sahih other than this one.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Talid bin Sulayman, whom al-Ijli declared thiqah (trustworthy) and said: There is no harm in him; he had Shi'i leanings and used to commit tadlis (concealing a link in the chain); a group of scholars declared him da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: Once a bitter exchange took place between Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) and Wadi'ah bin Thabit. Wadi'ah said to Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him): You are the slave of Abu Hudhayfah bin al-Mughirah, and he did not free you. Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: How many were the people of the Aqabah? (That is, the people who had planned to kill the Messenger of Allah at a mountain pass, since Wadi'ah was also one of those people.) Wadi'ah replied: Allah knows best. Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Answer me from your own knowledge! Wadi'ah remained silent. One of those present said: Tell him what he (that is, Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him)) is asking you about! Sayyiduna Ammar's (may Allah be pleased with him) intention was that Wadi'ah would tell him that he too was one of those people. Wadi'ah said: We used to talk about them being fourteen men. Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If you were among them as well, then they were fifteen. Wadi'ah said: O Abu al-Yaqzan, hold on! I adjure you by Allah not to disgrace me today. Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, I have not named anyone, nor will I ever name anyone; but I bear witness that of those 15 men, 12 are such that in the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses stand (those 12 men) will be the party of Allah and His Messenger.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and part of it is reported in the Sahih; its chain contains al-Waqidi, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for the expedition of Tabuk. When he reached a mountain pass, he ordered his announcer, who announced: No one should go towards the mountain pass, for the Messenger of Allah is about to go there. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was travelling; Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) was walking in front of his animal and Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) was driving it from behind. Meanwhile some people came riding on mounts, with their faces covered, and surrounded the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) turned back and struck the faces of those people's mounts. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Hudhayfah: "Keep going (with the animal)! Keep going!" Then Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) reached him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep driving (the animal)! Keep driving!" until (a little further on) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made the mount kneel. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him): "Do you recognise those people?" Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No. They had wrapped cloth over their faces, but I would recognise most of their mounts. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you know what those people intended regarding the Messenger of Allah?" I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Their intention was to take the Messenger of Allah along and throw him down from the mountain pass." (The narrator relates:) Later, on one occasion, a bitter exchange took place between Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) and one of those people, as happens between people. Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I adjure you by Allah and ask: How many were the people of the mountain pass who intended to deceive the Messenger of Allah? That man said: We think that they were fourteen. Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If you are among them as well, then they will be fifteen. Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) bore witness that 12 men will be counted, in the life of this world and on the Day of Resurrection, as the party of Allah Almighty and His Messenger.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Al-Tabarani relates: Ali bin Abd al-Aziz narrated this to us: Al-Zubayr bin Bakkar relates: "The names of the people of the mountain pass (who had planned to kill the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) are these: Mu'attib bin Qushayr bin Mulayl, who belonged to the Banu Amr bin Awf; he took part in the Battle of Badr. He is the one who said: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) promises us the treasures of Chosroes and Caesar, while not one of us is safe even when going out to relieve himself. He is also the one who said: If we had any say in the matter, we would not have been killed here. Al-Zubayr bin Bakkar says: Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) bore witness against this very man regarding these words. Wadi'ah bin Thabit bin Amr bin Awf: he is the one who said: We were only chatting and joking; and he is the one who said: Why is it that I see these reciters of ours have the greatest appetite for their stomachs and are the most cowardly when facing the enemy? Jadd bin Abdullah bin Nabtal bin al-Harith, who belonged to the Banu Amr bin Awf: he is the one about whom Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) said: O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), who is this black man with a lot of hair, whose eyes are like pots of brass, who looks with the eyes of a devil, and whose liver is the liver of a donkey? He conveys your news to the hypocrites. Al-Harith bin Yazid al-Ta'i, an ally of the Banu Amr bin Awf: he is the one who went first to the well which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had forbidden anyone to reach before him, and he drew water from it. Aws bin Qibti, who belonged to the Banu Harithah: he is the one who said: Our houses are exposed; he is the grandfather of Yahya bin Sa'id bin Qays. Al-Julas bin Suwayd bin al-Samit, who belonged to the Banu Amr bin Awf; it has reached us that he repented afterwards. Sa'd bin Zurarah, who belonged to the Banu Malik bin al-Najjar: he is the one who spread smoke against the Prophet; he was the youngest of them in age and the most wicked. Suwayd and Ra'ish, both of whom belonged to the Balhubla; these two were among those whom Abdullah bin Ubayy equipped at the expedition of Tabuk so that they would make people desert. Qays bin Amr bin Fahd. Zayd bin al-Lusayb, who was from the Jews of Qaynuqa'; he made a show of being a Muslim, but there was in him the deceit of the Jews and the hypocrisy of the hypocrites. Sulalah bin al-Humam, who belonged to the Banu Qaynuqa'; he made a show of being a Muslim."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir as a statement of al-Zubayr bin Bakkar, as you can see.

Sayyiduna Abu al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: At the time of the expedition of Tabuk, the announcer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) announced: The water is little, so no one should go to it (the spring) before me (that is, before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to that spring, some people had already reached it before him (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed those people.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain mentions that Yahya bin Muhammad bin al-Sakan narrated it from Bakr bin Bakkar, and I have not seen biographies of these two (in any book).

I said: O Sayyiduna Abu al-Tufayl, who were the people whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed? Tell me their names, who were they? The narrator relates: He intended to tell me their names, but his wife, Sayyidah Sawdah, said to him: O Abu al-Tufayl, stop! Has this narration not reached you that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, I am only a human being; whichever person among the believers I invoke against (and he does not deserve it), then make that invocation a means of purification and mercy for that person"?

Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed us. After praising and extolling Allah Almighty, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are some hypocrites among you; whoever I name should stand up (and leave)." Then he said: "Stand up, O so-and-so! Stand up, O so-and-so! Stand up, O so-and-so!" until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had named 36 men. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, among you (the narrator is unsure, or perhaps the words are:) from among you (that is, these people among you were hypocrites), so fear Allah." The narrator relates: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by a man whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had named; he had covered his head. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) knew him, and asked: What is the matter with you? He told him what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said. Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: I went to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and he said: O Abd al-Rahman bin Awf, do you fear that people will abandon Islam and leave it? I replied: No, if Allah wills (that will not happen). How could people abandon it when the Book of Allah and the Sunnahs of the Messenger of Allah are among them? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If any of that does happen, it will certainly be the Banu so-and-so (that is, they will be the ones who abandon it).
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
