Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed us. After praising and extolling Allah Almighty, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are some hypocrites among you; whoever I name should stand up (and leave)." Then he said: "Stand up, O so-and-so! Stand up, O so-and-so! Stand up, O so-and-so!" until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had named 36 men. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, among you (the narrator is unsure, or perhaps the words are:) from among you (that is, these people among you were hypocrites), so fear Allah." The narrator relates: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by a man whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had named; he had covered his head. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) knew him, and asked: What is the matter with you? He told him what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: May you be far removed forever (or: you are ruined forever).
Ahmad and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it; its chain contains Iyad bin Iyad, who narrated it from his father. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I have not seen any (hadith scholar) giving biographies of these two.
