Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 425

Sayyiduna Abu al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for the expedition of Tabuk. When he reached a mountain pass, he ordered his announcer, who announced: No one should go towards the mountain pass, for the Messenger of Allah is about to go there. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was travelling; Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) was walking in front of his animal and Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) was driving it from behind. Meanwhile some people came riding on mounts, with their faces covered, and surrounded the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) turned back and struck the faces of those people's mounts. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Hudhayfah: "Keep going (with the animal)! Keep going!" Then Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) reached him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep driving (the animal)! Keep driving!" until (a little further on) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made the mount kneel. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him): "Do you recognise those people?" Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No. They had wrapped cloth over their faces, but I would recognise most of their mounts. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you know what those people intended regarding the Messenger of Allah?" I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Their intention was to take the Messenger of Allah along and throw him down from the mountain pass." (The narrator relates:) Later, on one occasion, a bitter exchange took place between Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) and one of those people, as happens between people. Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I adjure you by Allah and ask: How many were the people of the mountain pass who intended to deceive the Messenger of Allah? That man said: We think that they were fourteen. Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If you are among them as well, then they will be fifteen. Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) bore witness that 12 men will be counted, in the life of this world and on the Day of Resurrection, as the party of Allah Almighty and His Messenger.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
