Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: Once a bitter exchange took place between Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) and Wadi'ah bin Thabit. Wadi'ah said to Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him): You are the slave of Abu Hudhayfah bin al-Mughirah, and he did not free you. Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: How many were the people of the Aqabah? (That is, the people who had planned to kill the Messenger of Allah at a mountain pass, since Wadi'ah was also one of those people.) Wadi'ah replied: Allah knows best. Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Answer me from your own knowledge! Wadi'ah remained silent. One of those present said: Tell him what he (that is, Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him)) is asking you about! Sayyiduna Ammar's (may Allah be pleased with him) intention was that Wadi'ah would tell him that he too was one of those people. Wadi'ah said: We used to talk about them being fourteen men. Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If you were among them as well, then they were fifteen. Wadi'ah said: O Abu al-Yaqzan, hold on! I adjure you by Allah not to disgrace me today. Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, I have not named anyone, nor will I ever name anyone; but I bear witness that of those 15 men, 12 are such that in the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses stand (those 12 men) will be the party of Allah and His Messenger.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and part of it is reported in the Sahih; its chain contains al-Waqidi, who is da'if (weak).
