Abu al-Qamus Zayd bin Ali narrates from one of the delegation of Abd al-Qays who came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: unless it was Qays bin al-Nu'man, for I have forgotten his name, that a man among us said: O Messenger of Allah, our land is an unhealthy land, and nothing suits it except drink; so which vessels are lawful for us and which are unlawful? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not drink from gourd vessels, hollowed-wood vessels or tar-coated vessels, and drink from leather vessels," or he said: "from a waterskin tied at the mouth. If it becomes strong, break its strength with water, and if it is beyond you, pour it out."
The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The established narrations of the story of the delegation of Abd al-Qays do not contain this wording, and in this chain there is one whose condition is unknown; and Allah knows best. It has also been narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning this story that he said: "If he fears its strength, let him pour water on it."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the delegation of Abd al-Qays: "Do not drink from hollowed-wood vessels, pitch-coated vessels, gourd vessels, green jars or large water-bags; rather, drink from your own waterskin what is not intoxicating, and if its strength is feared, let him pour water on it."
A group narrated it from Nuh bin Qays without mentioning this wording, so it seems to be the words of one of the narrators. Breaking it with water has also been narrated from Abu Hurayrah through another route, and its chain is weak.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The first to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about nabidh were Banu Abd al-Qays. They came and said: O Messenger of Allah, we live in a land of farming and we get our produce from it, so tell us about drinks. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Drink from drinking vessels, and do not drink from earthenware jars, gourd vessels, wooden vessels or vessels made with tar; and I have been forbidden wine, gambling and the drum, and every intoxicant is also forbidden." They said: O Messenger of Allah, what if it becomes very thick? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Mix water into it." Then they asked the same question and he gave the same answer again. Then, when they repeated the same question a third or fourth time, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When it becomes very strong, pour it out."
Abu Jamrah contradicted him in narrating from Ibn Abbas, so the mention of diluting it with water is the saying of Ibn Abbas himself.

Abu Jamrah said: Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) seated me on his couch and narrated the hadith. I said: Did Banu Abd al-Qays make such strong nabidh? He said: "When it becomes strong, mix water into it." Then he mentioned the hadith above, but did not mention adding water in it. The order to add water here applies before intoxication develops in it, since intoxication is unlawful and it does not become pure by adding water, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every intoxicant is unlawful."

Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) said that nabidh made in an earthenware jar, which had become frothy, was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Strike it against the wall. This is not the drink of one who believes in Allah and the Last Day." The Shaykh said: If it could become lawful by mixing water into it, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would never have told him to strike it against the wall.
In another narration from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade making nabidh in gourd vessels, tar-coated vessels, wooden vessels made from the root of the date-palm and glazed vessels, and also forbade making nabidh by mixing dry and fresh dates, or raisins and dates; whatever other than these becomes thick, mix water into it. But Thumamah bin Kilab in its chain is majhul (unknown), and what is established from Yahya bin Abi Kathir, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Qatadah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is the prohibition of mixing two kinds, without this wording.
Another marfu' narration has come from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), in which he said: "When you have doubt about a drink, pour water on it, discard what is unlawful in it and drink what is lawful." But this too is weak, because Ikrimah bin Ammar became confused at the end of his life and his memory deteriorated.

Al-Muttalib bin Abi Wada'ah al-Sahmi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: On a day of intense heat the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was performing tawaf of the House. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked some people of Quraysh for something to drink, so a man sent word to his house, and a slave-girl brought nabidh of raisins. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw it, he said: "Why did you not cover it, even with a stick laid across it?" When it was brought close to him (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) found an unpleasant smell in it, frowned, and returned the vessel. A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, if it is unlawful we will not drink it." They offered the vessel to him (peace and blessings be upon him) again, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned it in the same way, and the man said the same thing again. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called for Zamzam water, poured it into it and said: "When it becomes strong, mix water into it like this."

Al-Muttalib bin Abi Wada'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed tawaf on a hot day and asked for a drink, and a vessel of nabidh was brought to him. When he raised it to his mouth he frowned and left it. A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, this is the drink of the people of Makkah; is it unlawful?" He remained silent. Then it was brought to him a second time; he frowned and put it aside, and the man said the same to him. Then he called for a bucket of water and poured it into it, then gave it to the one next to him and the one on his right to drink, and said: "Do this with it when it overpowers you."
This was narrated only by al-Kalbi, and al-Kalbi is matruk (abandoned), and Abu Salih Badhan is da'if (weak); their reports are not used as proof. Yahya bin Yaman narrated it from Sufyan and erred in its chain.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) mentions the story of the tawaf of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and after mentioning the drink he (peace and blessings be upon him) called for, he says: A drink was brought and he (peace and blessings be upon him) drank from it; then he called for water, poured it into it and drank; then it was strong for him, so he called for water and poured it into it, then drank, twice or three times. Then he said: "When it becomes strong for you, kill (its strength) with water."
Yazid bin Abi Ziyad is da'if (weak); he is not used as proof because of his poor memory. Khalid al-Hadhdha narrated the story of the tawaf of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his drinking from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas, without mentioning what Yazid mentioned; this addition is known only from the narration of al-Kalbi, as has passed. Yazid also added that he drank from it before mixing it with water, which contradicts all the other narrations. How could it be thought of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he would drink an intoxicant, if it was intoxicating as they claim, before mixing it with water? This shows that it has no basis, and Allah knows best.

Ibn al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The people of Thaqif brought nabidh to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him); it was strong, so he mixed water into it two or three times and thinned it.

Abd al-Rahman bin Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) on a journey to Makkah when a riding party of Thaqif gave him two water-skins of nabidh. He drank one of them. Then milk was given to him as a gift, so he drank the milk and left the nabidh. Then, after some time, he came to drink the nabidh and saw that it had become thick, so he said: "Break it with water." Its thickening was, and Allah knows best, due to sourness or sweetness. Likewise it is reported from Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Yarfa': Go to our brothers and look for a drink for us with them. He went to them, and they said: We have nothing but this water-flask, and it has changed. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called for it, tasted it and frowned; then he called for water, poured it over it and drank. Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: By Allah, he only frowned because it had turned to vinegar.

Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "By Allah!" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) only frowned at the water-flask when he tasted it because it had turned to vinegar. A similar narration also comes from Ibn al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him). It is also reported from Utbah bin Farqad that the nabidh which Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) drank had turned to vinegar. And Zayd bin Aslam (may Allah have mercy on him) said that the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) used to break the strength of nabidh with water when it turned sour on them.

Ubaydullah bin Umar (may Allah have mercy on him) spoke with Abu Hanifah (may Allah have mercy on him) about nabidh, and Abu Hanifah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We took this from your father's side. He asked: What did he say? He said: When you are in doubt, mix water into it. So Ubaydullah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When you are certain and have no doubt, what will you do? And Abu Hanifah (may Allah have mercy on him) fell silent.
