Al-Muttalib bin Abi Wada'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed tawaf on a hot day and asked for a drink, and a vessel of nabidh was brought to him. When he raised it to his mouth he frowned and left it. A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, this is the drink of the people of Makkah; is it unlawful?" He remained silent. Then it was brought to him a second time; he frowned and put it aside, and the man said the same to him. Then he called for a bucket of water and poured it into it, then gave it to the one next to him and the one on his right to drink, and said: "Do this with it when it overpowers you."
This was narrated only by al-Kalbi, and al-Kalbi is matruk (abandoned), and Abu Salih Badhan is da'if (weak); their reports are not used as proof. Yahya bin Yaman narrated it from Sufyan and erred in its chain.
