Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The first to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about nabidh were Banu Abd al-Qays. They came and said: O Messenger of Allah, we live in a land of farming and we get our produce from it, so tell us about drinks. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Drink from drinking vessels, and do not drink from earthenware jars, gourd vessels, wooden vessels or vessels made with tar; and I have been forbidden wine, gambling and the drum, and every intoxicant is also forbidden." They said: O Messenger of Allah, what if it becomes very thick? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Mix water into it." Then they asked the same question and he gave the same answer again. Then, when they repeated the same question a third or fourth time, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When it becomes very strong, pour it out."
Abu Jamrah contradicted him in narrating from Ibn Abbas, so the mention of diluting it with water is the saying of Ibn Abbas himself.
