Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood on the pulpit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and delivered a sermon. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "Amma ba'd (to proceed): The prohibition of wine was revealed on the day it was revealed, and it is made from five things: (1) grapes, (2) dates, (3) honey, (4) wheat and (5) barley; and wine is whatever clouds the intellect."

Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) stood to deliver a sermon on the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "Amma ba'd (to proceed): Indeed, the prohibition of wine was revealed on the day it was revealed, and it is made from five things: grapes, dates, wheat, barley and honey; and wine is whatever clouds the intellect. And there are three matters, O people, about which I wished that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had not departed from us until he had given us a definitive instruction on them that we could settle on: the grandfather, kalalah (one who leaves neither parent nor child), and some of the chapters of usury (riba)." The narrator said: I said: What is your view about a sixth drink that is made in Sind, about which the ignorant make claims; a man drinks a single draught of it and it knocks him down, and it is made from rice? He said: This did not exist in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); had it existed, he would have forbidden it. Do you not see that he included all drinks when he said: Wine is whatever clouds the intellect?
Abu Bakr (al-Isma'ili) said: This indicates that the words "and wine is whatever clouds the intellect" are the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
