Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) stood to deliver a sermon on the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "Amma ba'd (to proceed): Indeed, the prohibition of wine was revealed on the day it was revealed, and it is made from five things: grapes, dates, wheat, barley and honey; and wine is whatever clouds the intellect. And there are three matters, O people, about which I wished that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had not departed from us until he had given us a definitive instruction on them that we could settle on: the grandfather, kalalah (one who leaves neither parent nor child), and some of the chapters of usury (riba)." The narrator said: I said: What is your view about a sixth drink that is made in Sind, about which the ignorant make claims; a man drinks a single draught of it and it knocks him down, and it is made from rice? He said: This did not exist in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); had it existed, he would have forbidden it. Do you not see that he included all drinks when he said: Wine is whatever clouds the intellect?
Abu Bakr (al-Isma'ili) said: This indicates that the words "and wine is whatever clouds the intellect" are the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
