And in another narration Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every intoxicant is unlawful."

All the other students of Malik narrated it from Malik like this as mawquf (a statement of Ibn Umar), except Rawh, who narrated it as marfu' in the narration of al-Dulabi from him; and Allah knows best.

Sa'id bin Abi Burdah narrates from his father, from his grandfather, Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him), that he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him and Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) to Yemen and said to them: "Give glad tidings, make things easy, teach, and do not drive people away." And I think he said: "And cooperate with each other." When he turned to leave, Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) came back and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! They have a drink made from honey which is cooked, and al-mizr which is made from barley. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Everything that intoxicates so as to keep one from prayer is unlawful."
Muslim narrated it from Muhammad bin Abbad.

Abu al-Juwayriyah says: I asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about al-badhaq. He said: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) preceded al-badhaq: "Whatever intoxicates is unlawful." He said: (Drink) the lawful, pure drink, not the unlawful, foul one.
In the version from Muhammad bin Kathir, he said: The lawful, pure drink. He said: After the lawful and pure there is nothing but the unlawful and foul.

Abu al-Juwayriyah says: I said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): Give me a ruling, may Allah have mercy on you, about al-badhaq. He said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) preceded al-badhaq: whatever intoxicates is unlawful." I said: Give me a ruling, may Allah have mercy on you, about al-badhaq, for we drink it. He said: "Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) preceded al-badhaq, and whatever intoxicates is unlawful." A man among the people said: We take grapes, press them, then cook the juice until it becomes lawful and pure. He said: Subhan Allah! Subhan Allah! Drink what is lawful and pure, for after the lawful and pure there is nothing but the unlawful and foul.

Some people came to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and asked about buying and selling wine. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked: "Are you Muslims?" They said: "Yes." So he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Trading in it is not right." And he said: "Fat was made unlawful for the Children of Israel, so they sold it and consumed its price." Then they said: What is your view about tila'? He (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "What is this tila'?" They said: Grapes are pressed and the juice is cooked, then it is put in dinan. He asked: "What are dinan?" They said: It is a jar coated with tar. He asked: "Does it intoxicate?" They said: When much of it is taken, it intoxicates. So he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Every intoxicant is unlawful."

Muhammad bin Abdullah says that when Abu Muslim al-Khawlani went for Hajj, he came to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). She (may Allah be pleased with her) began asking him about Syria and its cold, and asked: How do they endure this cold? He said: O Mother of the Believers! They drink a beverage called tila'. She (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Allah has spoken the truth, and my beloved conveyed it; he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People of my ummah will drink wine but will give it another name."

Sayyiduna Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People of my ummah will drink wine, calling it by another name; musical instruments will be played over their heads; Allah will cause the earth to swallow them and will turn some of them into apes and pigs."

Sayyiduna al-Sa'ib bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came out to us and said: I have detected the smell of drink on so-and-so; if he has drunk tila' and it was intoxicating, I will apply the prescribed punishment (hadd) to him. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) applied the full prescribed punishment to him.

Abu Ubayd (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Many reports have come regarding drinks, under different names, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and each has an explanation. The first of them is al-khamr: it is grape juice that has fermented, and there is no disagreement among the Muslims about its prohibition; the disagreement is only about the others. Among them is al-sakar: it is an infusion of dates untouched by fire, and about it it is narrated that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sakar is wine. Among them is al-bit': it is honey wine. Among them is al-ji'ah: it is barley wine. And among them is al-mizr: it is made from corn.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الأشربة والحد فيها / 17385
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he explained these four drinks and added: "And khamr is from grapes, and sakar is from dates." Abu Ubayd said: Among them is al-sukrukah, and its explanation has been narrated from al-Ash'ari, who said: It is made from corn.

Sayyiduna Safwan bin Muhriz (may Allah have mercy on him) says that he heard Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) delivering a sermon, and he (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the wine of the people of Madinah is from fresh dates, the people of Persia make it from grapes, the people of Yemen from honey, and the people of Abyssinia from corn. And Abu Ubayd (may Allah have mercy on him) says that al-fadikh is also a wine, which is made from fresh dates but is not touched by fire.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الأشربة والحد فيها / 17387
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The prohibition of wine was revealed, and there was no wine other than this fadikh of yours.
Abu Ubayd (may Allah have mercy on him) says that if wine is made by mixing dried and fresh dates, it is called khalitayn (the two mixed), and raisins and dates are the same. Likewise there is a drink called munassaf: grape juice is cooked, before it ferments, until half of it is gone, and I have learned that it becomes intoxicating; then it is unlawful. If after cooking only a third of it remains, it is tila', resembling the tar (tila') smeared on camels, which is thick and black; and some Arabs regard tila' as wine itself. Abid bin al-Abras said a verse about this:
They give wine the by-name tila'
Just as the wolf is given the by-name Abu Ja'dah
All these drinks are by-names for khamr, and I consider that all of them fall under the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "People of my ummah will drink wine but will give it another name," and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says that whatever clouds the intellect is wine.
