It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Write down for me the names of those among the people who have accepted Islam." So the names of one thousand five hundred men were written down for him (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: Do we fear while we are one thousand five hundred? Then I saw ourselves being tested, until a man among us would pray alone in fear. (b) It is narrated from al-A'mash: We found them to be five hundred.
(c) Abu Mu'awiyah said: They were between six hundred and seven hundred.
(61) Chapter: Giving the fay' according to the register (diwan), and with whom to begin

Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Mawhab said: I heard Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: I came to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) from Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) with eight hundred thousand dirhams. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked me: What have you brought? I said: Eight hundred thousand dirhams. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You have brought eighty thousand dirhams? I said: Rather, I have brought eight hundred thousand dirhams. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Did I not tell you that you are a foolish Yemeni? You have brought eighty thousand dirhams; so how much is eight hundred thousand? So I counted it out a hundred thousand at a time until I had completed it. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Is it good (lawful)? Woe to you! I said: Yes. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) spent the night sleepless, until the call was given for the morning prayer, and his wife said: O Commander of the Believers! You did not sleep last night. He said: How could Umar sleep when such wealth has come as never came before? What would make Umar safe if he were to die while that wealth was with him and he had not spent it where it is due? When he had led the morning prayer, a group of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) gathered around him. He said to them: Last night such wealth came as has never come before in Islam, and I have formed an opinion, so advise me: my view is that I should measure it out to the people by the measure. They said: O Commander of the Believers! Do not do so; people are entering Islam and wealth is increasing; rather, give according to a register, so that whenever the people increase and the wealth increases, you give to them accordingly. He said: Then advise me, with whom should I begin? They said: O Commander of the Believers! Begin with yourself, for you are the caliph; and some said: The Commander of the Believers knows best. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No, rather I will begin with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then those who are closest (to him). So the register (diwan) was set up. Ubaydullah said: He began with Hashim and al-Muttalib and gave all of them, then he gave Banu Abd Shams, then Banu Nawfal; and he began with Banu Abd Shams because he (Abd Shams) was Hashim's brother through his mother. Ubaydullah said: The first to make a distinction between Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib was Abd al-Malik.

Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب قسم الفيء والغنيمة / 13071
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) was informed by more than one of the people of knowledge and truthfulness from the people of Madinah and Makkah, from the tribes of Quraysh and others, some of whom related the account better than others, and some of whom added to what others said, that when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) compiled the registers, he said: "I will begin with Banu Hashim." Then he said: "I was present when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave to them and to Banu al-Muttalib; when the elder was among the Hashimis, he put him before the Muttalibi, and when he was among the Muttalibis, he put him before the Hashimi." So he set up the register on that basis and gave them the allotment of a single tribe. Then Abd Shams and Nawfal came out equal for him in the root of lineage, and he said: "Abd Shams are the brothers of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) through his father and mother, unlike Nawfal," so he put them first, then called Banu Nawfal to follow them. Then Abd al-Uzza and Abd al-Dar came out equal for him, and he said about Banu Asad bin Abd al-Uzza: "They are the in-laws of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)," and about them: "They are among the Mutayyabin (the Perfumed Ones)"; and some said: They are of the Hilf al-Fudul (the Alliance of Virtue), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was in both of them; and it is said that he mentioned precedence (in Islam). So he put them before Banu Abd al-Dar, then called Banu Abd al-Dar to follow them. Then Zuhrah was left on its own, so he called them after Abd al-Dar. Then Taym and Makhzum came out equal for him, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said about Banu Taym: "They are of the Hilf al-Fudul and the Mutayyabin, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was in both of them"; it is said that he mentioned precedence, and it is said that he mentioned a tie of marriage. So he put them before Makhzum, then called Makhzum to follow them. Then Sahm, Jumah and Adi bin Ka'b came out equal for him, and it was said to him: Begin with Adi. He said: "Rather, I will keep myself where I was, for Islam came while our affair and the affair of Banu Sahm were one; but look to Banu Jumah and Sahm." It is said that he put Banu Jumah first, then called Banu Sahm. The register of Adi and Sahm was mixed together as though it were a single call, so when his own call came to him on its own, he said Allahu Akbar in a loud voice, then said: "All praise is for Allah who has delivered to me my share from His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then he called Banu Amir bin Lu'ayy.
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Some of them said that when Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw those who had been put before him, he said: "Are you calling all of these before me?" He said: "O Abu Ubaydah, be patient as you have been patient, or speak to your people; whoever of them puts you before himself, I will not prevent him. As for me and Banu Adi, we will put you before ourselves if you wish." He said: Later, Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) put Banu al-Harith bin Fihr first, separating with them between Banu Abd Manaf and Asad bin Abd al-Uzza. And something came between Banu Sahm and Adi in the time of al-Mahdi, so they separated, and al-Mahdi gave the order concerning Banu Adi, so they were put before Sahm and Jumah because of the precedence among them.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jubayr bin Mut'im (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the share of the relatives from Khaybar, namely to Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib, Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and I came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and I said: O Messenger of Allah! These are your brothers, Banu Hashim; we do not deny their virtue. But what do you think about our brothers from Banu al-Muttalib? You (peace and blessings be upon him) gave to them and left us, while we and they are of the same standing in relation to you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They did not separate from us in the Jahiliyyah nor in Islam, and Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib are one and the same thing." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) interlaced his hands, one into the other.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب قسم الفيء والغنيمة / 13074
It is narrated from Zayd bin Ali (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hashim and al-Muttalib are like these two," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) joined his fingers and interlaced them, "may Allah curse whoever separates them; they raised us when we were young, and we carried them when we were grown."
The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Uthman and Sayyiduna Jubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) spoke about this because the lineage of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) is: Uthman bin Affan bin Abi al-As bin Umayyah bin Abd Shams bin Abd Manaf, and the lineage of Sayyiduna Jubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) is: Jubayr bin Mut'im bin Adi bin Nawfal bin Abd Manaf; and Hashim, al-Muttalib, Abd Shams and Nawfal were brothers. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the share of the relatives to Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib and not to Banu Abd Shams and Banu Nawfal, and said: "They did not separate from me in the Jahiliyyah nor in Islam; Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib are one and the same thing." In the mursal narration it says: "They raised us when we were young, and we carried them," or he said: "and they carried us when we were grown."
He (peace and blessings be upon him) said that, and Allah knows best, because Hashim bin Abd Manaf married Salma bint Amr bin Labid bin Haram of Banu al-Najjar in Madinah, and she bore him Shaybat al-Hamd. Then Hashim died while the child was with her. When the boy reached youth and grew up, his uncle al-Muttalib bin Abd Manaf went to him, took him from his mother and brought him to Makkah, riding behind him on his mount. It was said: A slave whom al-Muttalib owns (abd al-Muttalib); that name prevailed over him, and he was called Abd al-Muttalib. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent with the message, his people harmed him (peace and blessings be upon him) and intended evil against him (peace and blessings be upon him), so Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib, both their Muslims and their disbelievers, stood up to protect him (peace and blessings be upon him) and refused to hand him over. When Quraysh realised that there was no way to reach Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) while they were with him, they agreed to write a pact among themselves against Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib that they would neither marry their women nor give women to them in marriage, and would neither sell to them nor buy from them. Abu Talib then took them into the valley, the Shi'b of Abu Talib, on one side of Makkah, and Quraysh kept to their decision regarding Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib for two or three years, until they suffered severe hardship. Then Allah Almighty, by His mercy, sent termites against the document of Quraysh, and they left no name of Allah in it without eating it, and what remained in it was injustice, the severing of ties and slander. He informed His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) of that, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) informed Abu Talib, and Abu Talib sought support through it against his people. Hisham bin Amr bin Rabi'ah, together with a group whom Ibn Ishaq mentioned in al-Maghazi, stood up to annul what was in the document and to tear it up. For that reason, the Commander of the Believers Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) joined Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib together in all the allotments and put them before Banu Abd Shams and Banu Nawfal; and he began with Banu Abd Shams before Nawfal because Hashim, al-Muttalib and Abd Shams were full brothers through father and mother, their mother being Atikah bint Murrah, while Nawfal was their brother through their father only, his mother being Waqidah bint Harmal. Abd Manaf, Abd al-Uzza and Abd al-Dar, the sons of Qusayy, were brothers, and after Banu Abd Manaf the start was made with Banu Abd al-Uzza because it was the tribe of Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), for she is Khadijah bint Khuwaylid bin Asad bin Abd al-Uzza. And he said about them: "They are among the Mutayyabin (the Perfumed Ones)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I did not witness any alliance except the alliance of Quraysh, the Alliance of the Mutayyabin, and I would not love to have red camels in exchange for it and to have broken it." And the Mutayyabun are Hashim, Umayyah, Zuhrah and Makhzum.
The Shaykh said: I do not know whether this explanation is the statement of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) or of someone below him. The Shaykh said: It has reached me that it was called "Hilf al-Mutayyabin" (the Alliance of the Perfumed Ones) because on the day they made the alliance they dipped their hands in perfume and swore their oaths, and that happened when a dispute arose between Banu Abd Manaf and Banu Abd al-Dar over the duties in their hands: the siqayah (giving water to the pilgrims), the hijabah (custodianship of the Ka'bah), the rifadah (feeding the pilgrims), the banner and the Nadwah (council house). Banu Asad bin Abd al-Uzza, with a group of the tribes of Quraysh, followed Banu Abd Manaf, and because of that they had honour and merit among Banu Abd Manaf. Muhammad bin Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him) named them, saying: The Mutayyabun from the tribes of Quraysh were: Banu Abd Manaf, (namely) Hashim, al-Muttalib, Abd Shams and Nawfal; Banu Zuhrah; Banu Asad bin Abd al-Uzza; Banu Taym; and Banu al-Harith bin Fihr: five tribes. Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Some said that it was the Hilf al-Fudul (the Alliance of Virtue).

It is narrated from Talhah bin Abdullah bin Awf (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I witnessed an alliance in the house of Abdullah bin Jud'an which I would not exchange even for red camels, and if I were called to it in Islam, I would respond." Al-Qutaybi said: The cause of the alliance was that Quraysh used to wrong one another in the Haram, so Abdullah bin Jud'an and al-Zubayr bin Abd al-Muttalib stood up and called them to make an alliance to support one another and to take the right of the wronged from the wrongdoer; Banu Hashim and some of the tribes of Quraysh responded to the two of them.
The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Ibn Ishaq bin Yasar named them, saying: Banu Hashim bin Abd Manaf, Banu al-Muttalib bin Abd Manaf, Banu Asad bin Abd al-Uzza bin Qusayy, Banu Zuhrah bin Kilab and Banu Taym bin Murrah.
Al-Qutaybi said: They made the alliance in the house of Abdullah bin Jud'an and named it the Hilf al-Fudul, likening it to an alliance that had been made in Makkah in the days of Jurhum on fair dealing and on taking the right of the weak from the strong and of the stranger from the resident. It was undertaken by men of Jurhum called al-Fadl bin al-Harith, al-Fadl bin Wada'ah and al-Fadl bin Fadalah, so it was called the Hilf al-Fudul, gathering their names together. Others besides al-Qutaybi said that their names were Fadl, Fadal, Fudayl and Fadalah. Al-Qutaybi said: Fudul is the plural of Fadl, as one says Sa'd and Su'ud, Zayd and Zuyud. What is in the hadith of Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) is the Hilf al-Mutayyabin. Al-Qutaybi said: I think he meant the Hilf al-Fudul, because of the other hadith, and because the Mutayyabin are the ones who made the Hilf al-Fudul. He said: What virtue would there be in the like of the first alliance, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: "I would not like to break it even if I were to have red camels"? Rather, he meant the Hilf al-Fudul which the Mutayyabin made. Muhammad bin Nasr al-Marwazi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Some of those who know the Sirah and the history of the people said that his saying "Hilf al-Mutayyabin" in this hadith is a mistake; it is only the Hilf al-Fudul, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not live in the time of the Hilf al-Mutayyabin, as that was long before he was born. As for the precedence that was mentioned, it may be that the precedence of Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) in Islam is meant, for she was the first woman to accept Islam.

And it is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Allahumma a'izz al-Islam bi-Umar' (O Allah, grant honour to Islam through Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Ever since Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam, we have been honoured.
As for the statement of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): When Islam came, our affair and that of Banu Sahm was one, that is because Banu Sahm were the supporters of Banu Adi in the Jahiliyyah. Banu Jumah gathered against Banu Adi because of a feud between them, so Banu Sahm, the brothers of Jumah, stood up in their defence and said: Banu Adi are fewer than you in number; if you wish, bring out against them from among you a number equal to theirs, and we will leave you and them to each other; and if you wish, we will make up their number from among ourselves until they are like you. So they held back from one another. This was stated by al-Zubayr bin Bakkar (may Allah have mercy on him). The lineage of Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) is: Amir bin Abdullah bin al-Jarrah bin Hilal bin Uhayb bin Dabbah bin al-Harith bin Fihr bin Malik. This is the statement of Muhammad bin Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him) and others.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every nation has a trustworthy one, and the trustworthy one of this nation is Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah."
The Shaykh said: Abu Ubaydah was placed later in the allotment because of the distance of his lineage, not because of any lack of nobility. He is better than some of the close Qurashis (who were put before him).
