Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was made caliph, he said: My people know that my trade was sufficient for the provision of my family, and now I have been made ruler over the Muslims; so the family of Abu Bakr will now eat from this (wealth), and Abu Bakr will keep working to increase the Muslims' wealth.

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said at the time of his death: Look at everything that has increased in my wealth during my caliphate, and return it to the caliph after me. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When he passed away, we looked and found nothing added to his wealth except a she-camel with which he watered his orchard, and a slave who used to carry the children. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I sent them to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). She said: I was told that he wept and said: May Allah have mercy on Abu Bakr; he has made things very hard for those after him.

It is narrated from al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed the people; he praised and extolled Allah, then said: Wisdom is taqwa (God-consciousness), and folly is wickedness. Truthfulness in my sight is trustworthiness, and lying in my sight is betrayal. Beware! The strong in my sight is weak until I take the right from him, and the weak in my sight is strong until I take his right for him. Beware! I have been made ruler over you, and I am not the best of you. Al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: By Allah, he was the best of them, but the believer considers himself lowly. Then (Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)) said: I would love that one of you relieved me of this office. Al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: He spoke the truth, by Allah. (Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) And if you expect of me that by which Allah used to keep His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) upright through revelation, that is not with me; I am only a human being, so look after me. When morning came, he set off for the market. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Where are you heading? Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: To the market. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A matter has come to you that keeps you occupied from the market. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah)! Will it keep me from (providing for) my family too? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Take (from the wealth) in a fair manner. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Umar, I fear that it is not permissible for me to eat anything from this treasury. (The narrator) said: He spent eight thousand dirhams over two years and some months. When death came to him, he said: I had said to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that I feared it was not permissible for me to eat anything from the treasury, but he prevailed over me. So when I die, take eight thousand dirhams from my wealth and return them to the treasury. When those dirhams were brought to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: May Allah have mercy on Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him); he has left a very hard task for those after him.

Ahnaf bin Qays (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We were at the door of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), waiting for him to give us permission. A slave girl came out, and we said: Are you the concubine of the Commander of the Believers? She heard and said: I am not the concubine of the Commander of the Believers, nor am I lawful for him; I am part of the wealth of Allah. This was mentioned to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: She has spoken the truth; she is not lawful for me, nor is she my concubine; she is part of the wealth of Allah. And I will tell you what is lawful for me from it: I have made lawful for myself from it two garments, one for summer and one for winter, and (what suffices me for) my Hajj, my Umrah, my food and the food of my household; and my share with the Muslims is like that of one man among them; I am not above them.

Yarfa' (the servant) said: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: "I have placed myself, with respect to the treasury, in the position of the guardian of an orphan: if I am in need, I take from it; when I am well off, I return it; and if I have no need of it, I refrain from it."

Lahiq bin Humayd said: When Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Ammar bin Yasir, Abdullah bin Mas'ud and Uthman bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with them) to Kufah, he appointed Ammar over the prayer and the army, appointed Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) over judgeship and the treasury, and appointed Uthman bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) over the land. He fixed for them one goat every day: half of it for Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him), and the other half between these two. Sa'id said: I do not remember (the part about) the food. Then he said: I have placed (you and myself), with respect to the treasury, in the position of the guardian of an orphan: "And whoever is rich, let him abstain; and whoever is poor, let him eat in a fair manner" [Surah al-Nisa: 6]. And I do not think that a town from which a goat is taken every day will be anything but quickly ruined.

Abu Wa'il said: Ibn Ziyad appointed me over the treasury. A man from it came to me with a written order saying: Give the master of the kitchen eight hundred dirhams. I said to him: Stay where you are. Then I went to Ibn Ziyad and told him, and I said: Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) appointed Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) over judgeship and the treasury, Uthman bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) over the land watered by the Euphrates, and Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) over the prayer and the armies, and he provided them with one goat every day: half of it, with its offal and trotters, to Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him), because he was over the prayer and the army; a quarter of it to Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), and a quarter of it to Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) as well. Then he said: Wealth from which a goat is taken every day will quickly run out. Ibn Ziyad said: Put down the key and go wherever you wish.

Ibn al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) appointed me to collect the charity. When I had finished my work, he ordered a wage for me, and I said: I worked only for Allah. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Take what you are given, for I worked in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me a wage for it.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Sa'di (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he came to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) during his caliphate. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Have I not been told that you take charge of some of the people's affairs, and when you are given the wage, you dislike it?" I said: "Yes, indeed." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "What do you intend by that?" I said: "I have horses and slaves, and I am well off, and I want my wage to be charity for the Muslims." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do not do so, for I too had wanted that. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to give me a gift and I would say: Give it to someone in greater need of it than me. Until once he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me some wealth, and I said: Give it to someone in greater need of it than me. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Take it and keep it as your property, or give it in charity. Whatever comes to you of this wealth while you are neither eager for it nor asking for it, take it; and whatever does not come that way, do not let yourself pursue it.'"

Zayd bin Aslam narrated from his father that when the Year of Ashes (al-Ramadah) came and the lands of the Arabs were struck by drought, Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him): "From the servant of Allah, Umar, Commander of the Believers, to Amr bin al-As: By my life, you do not care, when you and those with you grow fat, that I and those with me grow lean. O for help!" Then (the narrator) mentioned the whole hadith, and in it he said: Then he called Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he went out for that task. When he returned, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent him a thousand dinars. Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Ibn al-Khattab, I did not work for you; I did this work only for Allah, and I will not take anything for it." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us (payment) for the tasks he sent us on, and we disliked that, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not accept our refusal. So accept it, O man, and use it to help you in your religion and your worldly life." So Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted it.

Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote: "As-salamu alaykum" (Peace be upon you) and "Amma ba'd" (To proceed)! Here I am at your service; camels are coming to you, the first of them will be with you and the last with me, with the hope that I will find a way by sea. When the first camels arrived, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: Take these first camels towards Najd, and send to me every household that you are able to send to me. And whoever you are unable to send, then order for each household a camel with what it carries, and order them to wear two garments, and to slaughter the camel, melt down its fat, cut its meat into strips and dry it, and make shoes from its hide. Then let them take a bundle of the dried meat, a bundle of the fat and a bowl of flour, and cook and eat, until Allah Almighty brings them provision. But Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) refused to go out. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! You will not find the like of this (opportunity) until you depart from this world. Then he called another man, I think it was Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him); he too refused. Then he called Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he went out on that mission. The rest of the hadith is similar.
