It is reported from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated in qunut against those tribes for a month, then abandoned it; but in the morning prayer he always continued to recite qunut until he departed this world.

Rabi' bin Anas says: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) when someone asked him: Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recite qunut for only one month? He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to recite qunut in the Fajr prayer until he departed this world.
Abu Abdullah (al-Hakim) said: This chain is sahih (authentic) and its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy). Abu Hatim and Abu Zur'ah described al-Rabi' bin Anas as saduq (truthful) and thiqah (trustworthy). Isma'il bin Muslim al-Makki and Amr bin Ubayd also narrated it from al-Hasan from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), but we do not use Isma'il al-Makki or Amr bin Ubayd as proof.

Ibrahim says that al-Aswad and Amr bin Maymun both narrate: We prayed the Fajr prayer behind Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he did not recite qunut.
Although Mansur is more retentive and more reliable than Hammad bin Abi Sulayman, Hammad's narration on this matter agrees with the well-known position of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding qunut.

(c) Likewise, Abu Rafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), as we shall mention, in sha' Allah.
(d) In a matter of this kind, the word of the one who both witnessed and remembered is what counts, not the word of the one who neither witnessed nor remembered. 'Wa billahi al-tawfiq' (And success comes only from Allah).

(a) Amr bin Murrah says: I heard Ibn Abi Layla narrate from Sayyiduna al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite qunut in the morning prayer.
Amr says: I mentioned this to Ibrahim al-Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him), and he said: He is not like the students of Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him); he was a man given to disputation. He says: I went back and abandoned qunut. Then the people of the mosque said: By Allah, we do not see in the mosque what has always been done in our mosque. He says: So I resumed qunut. This reached Ibrahim al-Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him), and he met me and said: This man is overpowered in his own prayer.
(b) Shaykh al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: This (stance) of Ibrahim al-Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) is not approved. Knowledge is not such that whatever is not found with the students of Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), but is found with others, is not to be taken; rather, it is taken if it comes from one of higher standing than the students of Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and the narrator is trustworthy, and Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla is a trustworthy (thiqah) narrator.
Amr bin Murrah reported about the people of the mosque that this practice (of observing qunut) had always continued in their mosque.
Likewise, a narration of Sayyiduna al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) has reached us through another chain, that he recited qunut in the Fajr prayer.
