Musnad Ahmad

Ata bin Abi Rabah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once someone praised Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), so he began to put dust in that person's mouth and said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say, "When you see someone praising another, then throw dust in his mouth."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the ring of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had the inscription «محمد رسول الله». (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had two muezzins.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that during the Prophetic era, two men from the east came to the court of the Messenger. They spoke while standing, then both of them sat down (and the orator of the Messenger, Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qais (may Allah be pleased with him), stood up, spoke, and then sat down). People were greatly astonished at their speech, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and said: "O people! Say your words in general terms, for breaking up speech into fragments is from Satan." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Some statements have an effect like magic."

When Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would return home after offering the Friday prayer, he would perform two rak‘ahs at home and would state that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to do the same.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Hell has seven gates, one of which is for the person who draws a sword against my Ummah."

Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to us. We hoped that he would narrate excellent hadiths to us, but before he could, a man (whose name was Hakam) spoke up and said, "O Abu Abdur Rahman! What is your opinion about fighting during the days of tribulation (fitnah)? Because Allah Almighty says: 'Fight them until there is no more fitnah.'" He replied, "May your mother weep for you! Do you know what fitnah is? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to fight the polytheists, and at that time, entering into the religion of the polytheists was fitnah. It was not like today, when you fight for the sake of government."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once I observed for a whole month that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite Surah Al-Kafiroon and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the two rak'ahs (Sunnah) before Fajr.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the ‘Isha prayer so much that those who sleep had gone to sleep, those who perform Tahajjud had performed Tahajjud, and those who stay awake remained awake. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and said: “If I did not fear hardship for my Ummah, I would have delayed the ‘Isha prayer until this time.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him a silk garment and gave Sayyiduna Usama (may Allah be pleased with him) a linen garment, and said: "The part of it that touches the ground will be in Hell."

It is narrated from Abdur Rahman A'araji that a man asked Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about temporary marriage with women in my presence, so he replied: In the blessed era of the Prophet (peace be upon him), we did not commit any immorality or lustfulness. Then he said: I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say that before the Day of Judgment, the Messiah Dajjal and thirty or more great liars will certainly appear.

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made this supplication at the beginning of Islam: "O Allah! Grant strength to Islam through one of these two men—Abu Jahl or Umar bin Khattab—whichever of them is more beloved to You." (Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, accepted Islam.) It is thus known that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was more beloved in the sight of Allah.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has made the truth flow upon Umar's heart and tongue." Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that whenever any matter was presented before the people and the people had one opinion and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had another opinion, then the Noble Qur'an would be revealed close to the opinion of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).

Narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: I have traveled with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and both of them did not pray more than two rak'ahs during travel. We were previously misguided, then Allah granted us guidance through the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so now we will follow him.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once I observed for twenty-four or twenty-five days that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite Surah Al-Kafirun and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the two rak'ahs (Sunnah) before Fajr and after Maghrib.

Salim says that regarding Hajj Tamattu’, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to give the same concession which Allah has revealed in the Qur’an and which is established from the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Some people would say to him, “Your father used to prohibit this, why do you oppose him?” He would reply to them, “Do you not fear Allah? If Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) forbade it, he also had good intentions in mind, that people should complete ‘Umrah. When Allah has made it lawful and the Prophet (peace be upon him) acted upon it, then why do you make it unlawful for yourselves? Is following the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him) better, or following Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) did not say to you that performing ‘Umrah in the months of Hajj is absolutely forbidden; he only said that the completion of ‘Umrah is that you travel for it separately in a month other than the months of Hajj.”

Ubaid bin Umair once asked Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), "I see you pushing through the crowd to touch the two corners, the Hajar Aswad and the Yemeni Corner. What is the reason for this?" Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied, "If I do so, it is because I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that touching these two corners wipes away a person's sins. And I also heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that whoever completes seven circuits of Tawaf, counting them, (and then offers two units of prayer for Tawaf), for every step a good deed will be written, a sin will be erased, a rank will be elevated, and it is equal to freeing a slave."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon there will come rulers over you who will command you to do things which they themselves do not do. Whoever affirms their lies and helps them in their oppression, he has no connection with me and I have no connection with him, and he will not be able to come to me at the Pond of Kawthar."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever asks you in the name of Allah, give to him; whoever invites you, accept his invitation; whoever gives you a gift, return something in exchange for it, and if you do not find anything to give in return, then pray for him so much that you feel certain you have repaid him."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: It is better for one of you to have his stomach filled with vomit than to have it filled with poetry.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Enter the lands of the punished nations weeping, for I fear that the same punishment that befell them may befall you as well."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a ring made of gold. He would turn its stone towards the palm of his hand. The people also had rings made. Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) threw it away, and the people also removed and threw away their rings. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a ring made of silver, with which he would seal (letters), but he would not wear it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Among the people, Usamah is the most beloved to me, except for Fatimah, but no one else."

Abdur Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I was walking with Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), and on the way, they passed by a severed head that was hanging on a gallows. Upon seeing it, he said, "The one who killed him is wretched." I said to him, "O Abu Abdur Rahman! Are you saying this?" As soon as he heard this, he withdrew his hand from mine and said, "I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: 'If any of my followers sets out to kill someone and kills him in such a manner (as the head of this murdered person is hanging), then the murdered person will go to Paradise and the killer to Hell.'"

Nafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that when the people of Madinah gathered with Sayyiduna Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) and broke their allegiance to Yazid bin Muawiyah, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) gathered all his sons and family members and said: We pledged allegiance to this person in the name of Allah and His Messenger, and I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that for every deceiver, a flag will be planted on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said: This is the betrayal of so-and-so. And after shirk, the greatest betrayal is that a man pledges allegiance to someone in the name of Allah and His Messenger and then breaks it. Therefore, none of you should break allegiance to Yazid, nor look into the matter of the caliphate, otherwise there will be no relation between me and him.

Khalid al-Khadda’ says that once Abu al-Malih (may Allah have mercy on him) said to Abu Qilabah (may Allah have mercy on him) that I and your father were present in the service of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he narrated to us this hadith: that he was present in the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) presented him with a leather cushion filled with palm fibers, but I did not sit reclining on it, and that cushion remained lying between me and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The greatest lie is that a person describes a dream which he did not see."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The noble son of the noble son of the noble son of the noble was Sayyiduna Yusuf, son of Yaqub, son of Ishaq, son of Ibrahim (peace be upon them)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gifted me one of the silk garments from among those silk garments which Firoz had presented to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I tied the lower garment (waist-wrapper), and it alone covered me in length and width. I wrapped it and put a sheet over it, and wearing it, I presented myself before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) caught hold of my neck and said: "O Abdullah! Raise your lower garment. Whatever part of the trousers hangs below the ankles will be in the Hellfire." Abdullah bin Muhammad, the narrator, says that after this, I never saw any person more careful about keeping his ankles uncovered than Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him a silk garment, and it began to hang below his ankles, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke harshly about it and mentioned Hell.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) walking facing the Qiblah.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The curse of Allah is upon alcohol itself, its drinker, the one who serves it, the one who sells it, the one who buys it, the one who squeezes (prepares) it, the one for whom it is squeezed, the one who carries it, the one for whom it is carried, and the one who consumes its price."

Aslam (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to dye his clothes and apply saffron oil. Someone asked him, "Why do you dye your clothes and apply saffron oil?" He replied, "I have seen that saffron oil was the most beloved of dyed things to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he used to apply its oil and dye his clothes with it."

Zaid bin Aslam narrates from his father that once I went with Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) to Abdullah bin Muti’, he welcomed Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) and ordered the people to present a cushion to him. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said, "I have not come to sit, rather I have come to narrate to you a hadith which I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever withdraws his hand from obedience to the rightful ruler, he will have no argument on the Day of Resurrection, and whoever dies having separated from the community, he dies the death of ignorance."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that in the beginning, we assumed Ihram only for Hajj with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Nuaim bin Nahham (may Allah be pleased with him), "whom the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave the title of Salih," says that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) requested his father to send a marriage proposal for him to the daughter of Salih. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "She has orphaned nephews; they will not prefer us over them." Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) then went to his uncle Zaid bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him to send the marriage proposal as well. So Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) himself went to Salih (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) has sent me to you with a marriage proposal for your daughter." Salih (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "My orphaned nephews are present; I cannot lower my own flesh and raise yours. I make you a witness that I have married this girl to such-and-such person." The girl's mother wanted to marry her to Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). She went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) had asked for my daughter's hand, but her father married her to his orphaned nephew under his care and did not even consult me." The Prophet (peace be upon him) called Salih and said, "Did you arrange your daughter's marriage without consulting your wife?" He replied, "Yes, that is what happened." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Consult women regarding themselves, even if they are virgins." Salih (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I did this only because the dowry that Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would give her, I already have that much of his wealth with me (I am indebted to him, so I did not wish to give my daughter in marriage to him in this situation)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The greatest act of goodness is that a person maintains ties with his father's friends after his father's death."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once we were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man said «الله اكبركبيرا والحمدلله كثيرا وسبحان الله بكرة واصيلا». The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "Who said these words?" The man replied, "O Messenger of Allah! I said them." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Him in Whose hand is my soul, I saw these words ascending, until all the gates of the heavens were opened for them." Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that since I heard this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I have never abandoned these words, and Awn (may Allah have mercy on him) says that since I heard these words from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), I have never abandoned them.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Two types of dead animals and two types of blood have been made lawful for us. As for the dead animals, they are fish and locusts (for which there is no need for slaughter), and as for the blood, it is the liver and the spleen."
