Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Khathimah, may Allah have mercy on him, says that Isa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him) and Yahya (peace be upon him) were maternal cousins. Isa (peace be upon him) used to wear woolen clothes, and Yahya (peace be upon him) used to wear clothes made from camel skin. Neither of them possessed any dirham nor dinar, nor did they have any slave or bondwoman, nor did they have any place of shelter where they could take refuge. Wherever night would fall, they would stay there. Then, when they intended to part ways, Yahya (peace be upon him) would request Isa (peace be upon him) to give him some advice. He would say, "Do not get angry." Yahya (peace be upon him) would reply, "I cannot control myself from getting angry." Then Isa (peace be upon him) would say, "Do not accumulate wealth." Yahya (peace be upon him) would respond, "Indeed, this is an easy task."

It is narrated from Hazrat Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) in the commentary of the Holy Qur'an verse { وَکَأْسٍ مِنْ مَعِینٍ } that these glasses will be filled with flowing wine.

Hazrat Abu Alaa (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that when the time of death approached for one of the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he began to say, "Alas, alas." He was asked, "What are you grieving over?" He replied, "I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), 'What will be sufficient for me in this world?' The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, 'A servant and a mount.' But I neither remained silent and refrained from asking, nor did I act upon what I was told when I asked. I acquired worldly possessions, and now I own such and such wealth, and death has overtaken me."

Hazrat Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) says that regarding this Ummah, this verse was revealed { قل أَؤُنَبِّئُکُمْ بِخَیْرٍ مِنْ ذَلِکُمْ } so Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Allah, at this time."

Hazrat Muhammad bin Wasi’ says that when I came from Makkah, there was a bridge over a trench on the way. I started walking on that bridge. That bridge took me to Marwan bin Muhallab, who was the governor of Basra. He welcomed me and said, “O Abdullah, do you have any need?” I said, “My need is that I become as the brother of Bani Adi said.” He asked, “Who is the brother of Bani Adi?” So I replied, “Ala bin Yazid.” Ala bin Yazid said that one of his friends was asked to be appointed as an official over some work, so he replied, “Amma ba’d (as for what follows), if you are able to spend the night in such a state that your back is light, your stomach is empty, and your hands are clean from the blood and wealth of Muslims, then if you do this, there is no blame upon you. The blame is only upon those who oppress people and commit excesses in the land.” Marwan said, “You have spoken the truth and given good advice.” Then Marwan asked, “Do you have any need, Abu Abdullah?” So I said, “My need is that you let me return to my family.” He replied, “Why not.”

Hazrat Ibn Sabit (may Allah have mercy on him) says that in Paradise there is a tree from whose root Allah has created all beautiful voices, which will delight and please the people of Paradise.

Hazrat Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said that three scholars gathered together and they asked each other, "How much hope do you have?" One replied, "I think I will live for one month and then die." They said, "This is a great hope." Then they asked the second, "How much hope do you have?" He replied, "I think I will live until one Friday and then die." They asked the third, "What is your hope?" He replied, "What hope can a person have whose very soul is in someone else's possession?"

Hazrat Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the example of the son of Adam is like that person whose time of death has drawn near, so his family, his wealth, and his deeds come to him. He says to his family, "Keep this death away from me," but they reply, "We can prevent you from worldly matters, but we cannot stop this death." Then he says to his wealth, "Keep this away from me," but it replies, "I was only an adornment for you in this world, but I cannot keep this matter away from you." Then his deeds reassure him, saying, "I am your companion who will enter the grave with you, and wherever you go, I will be with you." So that person says, "If only I had accepted earlier that you are more effective for me than all of them." The narrator says that Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "From now on, give it preference over the others."

Hazrat Kardus Thalabi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that it is written in the Torah: Fear Allah, you will be saved. For salvation is only in piety. Show mercy, mercy will be shown to you. Repent, your repentance will be accepted.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abi Nazrah (may Allah have mercy on him) that I entered upon a man, and he saw his slave above him like a star. So he asked, "O Allah, this was my slave in the world; who has raised him to this rank?" Allah replied, "His deeds were better than yours."

Hazrat Abu Husain (may Allah have mercy on him) says that if you were to see what I have seen, your liver would burn to ashes. Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: If the night becomes long for me until I reach the morning, then I will see that thing.

Hazrat Abu Musa Taimi, may Allah have mercy on him, says that when "Nawar," the wife of Farazdaq, passed away, many people from Basra attended her funeral. Among them was Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him. Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him, asked Farazdaq, "O Abu Firas, what have you prepared for this day?" He replied, "For eighty years I have borne witness that there is no deity except Allah." The narrator says that when his wife was buried in the grave, Farazdaq stood by her grave and recited these verses:

1. If I am not dealt with mercifully, then after the grave, I fear a fire and a constriction even greater than the grave.
2. That on the Day of Resurrection, a severe driver and a leader will be driving Farazdaq forward.
3. The person from the descendants of Darim is ruined, who was blinded, made to wear a collar, and taken towards Hell.
