Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that Sayyiduna Qabisah bin Mukhariq al-Hilali (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and greeted him with salam. He (peace and blessings be upon him) returned his greeting and welcomed him, then said: "O Qabisah, what has brought you here?" He said: O Messenger of Allah, I have grown old, my skin has become thin, my strength has weakened, I have become weak in providing for my family, and I am unable to do things I used to do. So teach me some words by which Allah may benefit me, and keep it brief. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Qabisah, when you have prayed Fajr, say three times: 'Subhan Allahi wa bihamdihi, subhan Allahil-'azimi wa bihamdihi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him; glory be to Allah the Magnificent and praise be to Him; and there is no might nor power except with Allah). For when you say that, you will be safe, by the permission of Allah, from blindness, leprosy and vitiligo. And also say: 'Allahumma-hdini min 'indik, wa afid 'alayya min fadlik, wa-nshur 'alayya min rahmatik, wa anzil 'alayya min barakatik' (O Allah, guide me from Yourself, pour upon me of Your bounty, spread over me of Your mercy, and send down upon me of Your blessings)." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kept saying these words and Qabisah (may Allah be pleased with him) kept counting them on his fingers.

Kinanah al-Adawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I was with Sayyiduna Qabisah bin Mukhariq (may Allah be pleased with him) when some people of his tribe came to him, seeking his help with the marriage of one of their men, but he refused to give them anything, so they left him. Kinanah said: I said to him: You are the chief of your people; they came to you asking, and you gave them nothing? He said: As for this matter, I will give nothing. Even if he were to chew a leather strap (out of hunger) until he dried it up, that would be better for him than asking people for something like this. And I will tell you about that: I took upon myself a guarantee (for a payment) on behalf of my people, so I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have taken upon myself a guarantee on behalf of my people, and I have come to you so that you may help me with it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, O Qabisah, we will bear it for you and pay it to them from the charity." Then he said: "O Qabisah, asking is forbidden except in one of three cases: a man struck by a calamity that destroys his wealth, so he may ask until he obtains enough to sustain his living, then he stops; a man struck by severe need, until three men of sound judgement from his people testify that asking has become permissible for him, so he may ask until he obtains enough to sustain his living, then he stops; and a man who takes on the burden of a guarantee, so he may ask until he has reached the amount, then he stops. Anything other than that is unlawful earnings (suht), which the one who eats it eats as something unlawful."

And, O Qabisah, asking other than in these is unlawful earnings (suht), which the one who asks eats as something unlawful."

The parable of me and you is that of a man who saw the enemy and ran to warn his family, and he feared that the enemy would reach his family before him, so he began to cry out: O my companions! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and prayed two rak'ahs in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) lengthened the standing. So when you see them, pray like the most recent prayer you have prayed."
