Sayyiduna Qabisah bin Mukhariq al-Hilali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I took upon myself a guarantee (for a payment), so I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to ask him about it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stay, O Qabisah, until the charity comes, and we will give you from it." Then he said: "O Qabisah, asking is permissible only for one of three: a man who takes on the burden of a guarantee, so asking becomes permissible for him until he obtains it, then he stops; and a man struck by poverty and want, until three men of sound judgement from his people say: So-and-so has truly been struck by want, so asking becomes permissible for him until he obtains enough to sustain his living, or enough to suffice him. And, O Qabisah, asking other than in these is unlawful earnings (suht), which the one who asks eats as something unlawful."
