Kinanah al-Adawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I was with Sayyiduna Qabisah bin Mukhariq (may Allah be pleased with him) when some people of his tribe came to him, seeking his help with the marriage of one of their men, but he refused to give them anything, so they left him. Kinanah said: I said to him: You are the chief of your people; they came to you asking, and you gave them nothing? He said: As for this matter, I will give nothing. Even if he were to chew a leather strap (out of hunger) until he dried it up, that would be better for him than asking people for something like this. And I will tell you about that: I took upon myself a guarantee (for a payment) on behalf of my people, so I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have taken upon myself a guarantee on behalf of my people, and I have come to you so that you may help me with it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, O Qabisah, we will bear it for you and pay it to them from the charity." Then he said: "O Qabisah, asking is forbidden except in one of three cases: a man struck by a calamity that destroys his wealth, so he may ask until he obtains enough to sustain his living, then he stops; a man struck by severe need, until three men of sound judgement from his people testify that asking has become permissible for him, so he may ask until he obtains enough to sustain his living, then he stops; and a man who takes on the burden of a guarantee, so he may ask until he has reached the amount, then he stops. Anything other than that is unlawful earnings (suht), which the one who eats it eats as something unlawful."
