Mus'ab bin Sa'd narrates: Before Badr, the polytheists seized Sayyiduna Hudhayfah and his father and wanted to kill them. They took a covenant and pledge from them that they would not help against us, and then they released them both. The two of them came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "We have pledged to them that we will not help against them; but if you wish, we will fight alongside you." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather we will fulfil our pledge to them, and we will seek Allah's help against them."

The two of them related: We said: "No." Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: So he took a pledge from us that we would not help against them. Then when we came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we mentioned this to him and said: "O Prophet of Allah, these people have taken a pledge from us, and if you order us to fight alongside you, we will fight." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather we will seek Allah's help, and we will fulfil our pledge to them."

Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The day most delightful to my eyes and most beloved to me is the day I come to my family and find no food with them, and they say: "We have neither little nor much." And he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Allah keeps the believer away from the world more strictly than a sick person's family keep him away from food; and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, looks after the believer through trials far more than a father looks after his child through good things."

He said: "Show me what you have bought for me." We showed him, and he said: "This is not suitable as my shroud. Two white sheets without a shirt are enough for me, for I will remain only a short while before I attain something better than them or worse than them." So we bought him two white sheets.

Silah bin Zufar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: By Allah, we asked Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) about that, and he said: I was walking with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey one night. We travelled for part of the night, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dozed off on his mount. Some people said: "If we push him now, he will fall and his neck will break, and we will be rid of him." When I heard what they said, I went ahead of them and walked between them and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I began reciting a surah of the Qur'an. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up and asked: "Who is this?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am Hudhayfah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Come near." I came near, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did you hear what these people behind you were saying?" I said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah; that is why I walked between you and them." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Listen, they are hypocrites: so-and-so, so-and-so and so-and-so."

Silah bin Zufar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We said to Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him): How did you come to recognise the matter of the hypocrites, when not one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recognised it, neither Sayyiduna Abu Bakr nor Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both)? He said: I was walking behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) fell asleep on his mount. Then I heard some people among them saying: If we throw him off his mount, his neck will break, and we will be rid of him. So I began walking between them and him (peace and blessings be upon him), and I began reciting the Qur'an in a loud voice, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up and asked: "Who is this?" I said: Hudhayfah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who were these people?" I said: So-and-so and so-and-so, until I had named them all. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did you hear what they said?" I said: Yes, and that is exactly why I walked between you and them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Listen, so-and-so and so-and-so" (until he (peace and blessings be upon him) had named them) "are hypocrites. Do not tell anyone."
