Abdul Rahman bin Jabir narrates from his father: There was a bitter exchange of words between Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) and Wadi'ah bin Thabit, and Wadi'ah said to Ammar: You are nothing but the slave of Abu Hudhayfah bin al-Mughirah; he has not freed you yet. Ammar asked: How many were the people of al-Aqabah? He said: Allah knows best. Ammar said: Tell me according to what you know. Wadi'ah fell silent, so those who were present said: Answer what he has asked you. (In fact, Ammar's aim was to make it known that Wadi'ah himself was one of them.) So Wadi'ah said: We used to say among ourselves that they were fourteen men. Ammar said: If you were among them, then they are fifteen. Wadi'ah said: Wait, O Abu al-Yaqzan! I ask you by Allah, do not disgrace me. Ammar said: By Allah! I have not named anyone, nor will I ever name anyone, but I bear witness that of those fifteen men, twelve are at war with Allah and His Messenger in the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses will stand.

Zubayr bin Bakkar said: The names of the people of al-Aqabah: Mu'attib bin Qushayr bin Mulayl, of Banu Amr bin Awf, who was present at Badr. He is the one who said: Muhammad promises us the treasures of Khosrau and Caesar, while not one of us is even safe when relieving himself. And he is the one who said: If we had any say in this matter, we would not have been killed here. Zubayr said: And he is the one against whom al-Zubayr bore witness to these words. Wadi'ah bin Thabit bin Amr bin Awf: he is the one who said: We were only indulging in idle talk and playing; and he is the one who said: Why is it that these reciters of ours have the biggest bellies and are the greatest cowards at the time of battle? Jidd bin Abdullah bin Nabil bin al-Harith, of Banu Amr bin Awf: he is the one about whom Jibril (peace be upon him) said: O Muhammad! Who is this black man with much hair, whose eyes are like two pots of brass, who looks with the eyes of a devil, whose liver is like the liver of a donkey, who passes your news on to the hypocrites, and who chews over his own dung? Al-Harith bin Yazid al-Ta'i, an ally of Banu Amr bin Awf: he is the one who got first to the water spring which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had forbidden anyone to touch, and drew water from it. Aws bin Qayzi, of Banu Harithah: he is the one who said: Our houses are exposed (that is, he made an excuse to stay behind from jihad); and he is the grandfather of Yahya bin Sa'id bin Qays. Al-Jullas bin Suwayd bin al-Samit, of Banu Amr bin Awf; and news has reached us that he repented afterwards. Sa'd bin Zurarah, of Banu Malik bin al-Najjar: he is the one who used to plot against the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was the youngest of them in age and the most wicked of them. Qays bin Qahd, of Banu Malik bin al-Najjar. Suwayd and Da'is, both of Banu Balhubla; they were both among those whom Ibn Ubayy equipped at Tabuk to dishearten the people. Qays bin Amr bin Sahl; and Zayd bin al-Lusayt, who was one of the Jews of Qaynuqa'; he outwardly professed Islam, but in him was the deceit of the Jews and the hypocrisy of those who were hypocrites. Salamah bin al-Humam, of Banu Qaynuqa'; he too outwardly professed Islam.
