حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ، ثنا مُصَرِّفُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْيَامِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ، ثنا مُجَالِدٌ، عَنْ عَامِرٍ، عَنْ صِلَةَ بْنِ زُفَرَ، قَالَ: قُلْنَا لِحُذَيْفَةَ: كَيْفَ عَرَفْتَ أَمْرَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ، وَلَمْ يَعْرِفْهُ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَلَا عُمَرُ رَضِي اللهُ عَنْهُمْ؟ قَالَ: إِنِّي كُنْتُ أَسِيرُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَنَامَ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ، فَسَمِعْتُ نَاسًا مِنْهُمْ يَقُولُونَ: لَوْ طَرَحْنَاهُ عَنْ رَاحِلَتِهِ فَانْدَقَّتْ عُنُقُهُ، فاسْتَرَحْنَا مِنْهُ. فَسِرْتُ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَهُ، وَجَعَلْتُ أَقْرَأُ وَأَرْفَعُ صَوْتِي، فَانْتَبَهَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: «مَنْ هَذَا؟» فَقُلْتُ: حُذَيْفَةُ. قَالَ: «مَنْ هَؤُلَاءِ؟» قُلْتُ: فُلَانٌ وَفُلَانٌ، حَتَّى عَدَدْتُهُمْ. قَالَ: «أَوَسَمِعْتَ مَا قَالُوا؟» قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ؛ وَلِذَلِكَ سِرْتُ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهُمْ. قَالَ: «فَإِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ فُلَانًا وَفُلَانًا - حَتَّى عَدَّ أَسْمَاءَهُمْ - مُنافِقُونَ، لَا تُخْبِرَنَّ أَحَدًا»
Silah bin Zufar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We said to Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him): How did you come to recognise the matter of the hypocrites, when not one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recognised it, neither Sayyiduna Abu Bakr nor Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both)? He said: I was walking behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) fell asleep on his mount. Then I heard some people among them saying: If we throw him off his mount, his neck will break, and we will be rid of him. So I began walking between them and him (peace and blessings be upon him), and I began reciting the Qur'an in a loud voice, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up and asked: "Who is this?" I said: Hudhayfah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who were these people?" I said: So-and-so and so-and-so, until I had named them all. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did you hear what they said?" I said: Yes, and that is exactly why I walked between you and them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Listen, so-and-so and so-and-so" (until he (peace and blessings be upon him) had named them) "are hypocrites. Do not tell anyone."
