Al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We said: "How did Hudhayfah attain what neither Sayyiduna Abu Bakr nor Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) attained?" Silah bin Zufar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: By Allah, we asked Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) about that, and he said: I was walking with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey one night. We travelled for part of the night, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dozed off on his mount. Some people said: "If we push him now, he will fall and his neck will break, and we will be rid of him." When I heard what they said, I went ahead of them and walked between them and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I began reciting a surah of the Qur'an. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up and asked: "Who is this?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am Hudhayfah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Come near." I came near, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did you hear what these people behind you were saying?" I said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah; that is why I walked between you and them." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Listen, they are hypocrites: so-and-so, so-and-so and so-and-so."
